Realities of credit card debt

When it comes to economic indicators, the big national metrics don’t always reflect what is happening in ordinary households. But families certainly understand what it means for them if they are forced to rely more on credit cards to get by. According to WalletHub’s “States with Largest and Smallest Credit Card Debt Increases,” released this month, Ohio has the eighth-largest credit card debt increase in the country in the second quarter. In the Buckeye State, the average credit card debt increased by $858,373 from Q1. The average household in the state owes $9,352 in credit ...

Generic competition shouldn’t come at the expense of patient safety

One of the great triumphs of health policy is America’s generic drug market. Nine out of ten U.S. prescriptions are filled with generics. That overwhelming share saves patients and taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars annually — and fuels innovation. Pharmaceutical companies know that their exclusivity on new therapies won’t last forever — typically only 12 to 14 years — which incentivizes them to keep developing new treatments instead of relying on older ones. This achievement rests on one crucial principle: generics compete on cost, not by cutting corners on safety or ...

Win-dow! Win-dow! Win-dow! A motivational chant

Anyone who reads this column on a regular basis knows that my husband Mike and I aren’t very good at taking days off. When we are off from work, we almost always find some project to occupy our time. It seems we are constantly remodeling and replacing outdated or insufficient things around our home and property. This past week was no exception. We took Thursday as a day off together, and even before it began we knew exactly what we were setting out to do. So, before we headed to bed on Wednesday, I tried to get us in the right mindset with a spirited chant: “Win-dow! Win-dow! ...

A new strategy for hunting

Southeast Ohio is facing the largest outbreak in the region’s confirmed cases of epizootic hemorrhagic disease in deer. An Ohio Division of Wildlife deer biologist told The Columbus Dispatch this year’s outbreak is the largest he has seen in his career, and that hundreds of dead or sick deer have been reported in Athens, Meigs, Monroe, Morgan, Noble and Washington counties. Counties along the Ohio River in West Virginia have been affected, too. The disease had not been confirmed in Belmont, Harrison or Jefferson counties as of late July, but it is nearby — and confirmed in ...

Trump’s Lauding of Putin

Dear Editor, The recent peace meeting that was held in Alaska USA between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the president of our great country Donald J Trump which proved to be highly unsuccessful and quite embarrassing as the presumed leader of the free world Trump shamelessly catered and acquiesced to notorious war criminal and malicious dictator Putin by giving him the red carpet treatment literally which is a symbol of ultimate respect in order to attempt presumably to finally end Russia’s war of aggression against a neighboring sovereign nation Ukraine during which is reported ...

Charlie Kirk

Dear Editor, Charlie Kirk is dead. He was a young man who stood strong in his convictions of what was right and just. He wanted the youth of our country to believe in the basic things that made us strong. He spoke of God, family, and country. We cannot survive as a nation without these three. Two thousand years ago the Son of God came to this world and spoke of truth, holiness, righteousness, and love. Charlie Kirk was hated by many of the elites for what he stood for. He was lumped in with all of us who are Christian Conservatives and called fascist, Nazi, Hitler. Two thousand ...
