Area players honing skills on junior tours

A handful of area players took part in the First National Bank Junior Golf Tour event at Fire Ridge Golf Course in Millersburg last week.

Martins Ferry’s Joel Shane was the top area finisher with a round of 83, which was good enough to tie for sixth overall in the 16-18 year old division.

River’s Mikayla Newman was fifth in the 16-18 year old division with a round of 53. The round was shortened from 18 to nine holes because of rain.

Other area players competing included: Union Local’s Josh Briton and St. Clairsville’s Will Foster.

The tour resumed play on Monday at the Cambridge Country Club.

Union Local’s Jarrett Causby and Bridgeport’s Matt Herink were the top area finishers, posting a round of 85, which was tied for ninth.

Shane finished with a round of 87.

In the girls’ 16-18 year old division, Newman finished third after a scorecard playoff.

Other local players taking part included Bridgeport’s Kevin Herink, Buckeye Trail’s Rylie Smith and Foster.

OVGL SCRAMBLE

It will be an Ohio Valley Golf League tournament and be played in scramble format with separate teams for boys and girls, which is mandatory by OHSAA rules. Schools are able to enter more than one team.

The entry fee is $20 per player and the event is open to schools in Ohio or West Virginia.

The top three teams will receive awards.

BELMONT HILLS JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

The annual junior tournament will be held on Monday, July 27 at Belmont Hills Country Club. The event will feature divisions for boys and girls, including ages 17-18, 15-16 and 13-14 for boys; 16-18 and 13-15 for girls. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start.

The top three finishers in each age group, for boys and girls, will receive an award. The entry fee is $30 with checks being made payable to Barnesville Golf Parents. Lunch will be provided for all tournament contestants and available for purchase for all spectators. Carts will be available for spectators, but they must remain on the cart path.

SALT FORK JUNIOR

TOURNAMENT

The annual event will be held on Monday, July 6 at Salt Fork Golf Course. There will be competition for three divisions for boys (17-18, 15-16, 13-14) and the two for girls (16-18, 13-15). The top three boys finishers in each division will receive an award, while the top two girls.

The event will begin with a shotgun start at 9:30. The entry fee is $30 for those without Salt Fork memberships and $20 for those with memberships.

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

The Gabe Benson-Joe Figaretti Memorial event was held last week. Mike DeSantis prevailed in the evewnt with a round of 33. He was two shots better than Roger Kupfer and three shots clear of Jim Ennis and Gary Mercer. Bob Green and Robbie Evans finished tied for fifth with rounds of 37.

In the handicap scoring, Art Lightner prevailed with a 33. Mike Perring also finished with a 33 for second and Paul Carney was third with a 33. Rich Colley was fourth with a 34. A three-way tie between Dave Slonaker, Russ Travis and Matt DeSantis for fifth with a 34.

UPCOMING SCRAMBLES

A golf scramble In Memory of Mario Veneri is being sponsored by the Powhatan American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Youth Fund. This is the second one, the first was in memory of Marvin Brown. The date is July 25 with shotgun start at 9 a.m., at Horseshoe Bend golf course in Armstrong Mills.

The entry fee is $200 per team, which includes cart, food, and refreshments. Team are encouraged to pre-register to ensure team entry. Cash prizes for the top three teams will be warded.
