Tom Carney event crowns winners
The Tom Carney Best Ball Tournament was held last Saturday and Sunday.
In Flight I, there was a tie for first at 62 between the duos of Vic Wood and Rick Frio; Larry Landtiser and Rennie Minor and Jack Carpenter and Chuck Poindexter.
In Flight II, the Saturday winners were Steve Mercer and Dan Auber at 60, while Marlin Harper and Bill Sokolowski fired a 62.
Winning Flight I during Sunday’s action were the teams of Bob Bethel and Chuck Newell as well as Jack Carpenter and Chuck Poindexter. Each team shot a round of 63.
Brian Delloma and Kevin Abel won Flight II on Sunday with a score of 59. There was a tie for second place between the teams of Courtney Smith and Any Yanok; Tom Hazlett and The Tim Conway; and Steve Mercer and Dan Auber. Each duo posted a round of 64.
The overall championship went to Jack Carpenter and Chuck Poindexter, while Brian Delloma and Kevin Abel were second.
The individual low gross went to Larry Landtiser, while Steve Mercer was the low net with a 133.
The closest to the pin winners were Andy Cox and Larry Gertscher.
WHEELING COUNTRY CLUB
Thadd Obecny II reclaimed the Wheeling Country Club championship. The recent transfer to Coastal Carolina fought off Rico Simonetti for the championship in the match-play event held Sunday.
The women’s championship was also held. Vicki Wright prevailed with a round of 72. Kim Miller (79), Karen Diorio (81) and Sharon Byrd (89) rounded out the field.
WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB
The Wheeling Park Golf Club held its two-day President’s Cup event late last month.
David Coram prevailed with a score of 130. He was seven shots clear of Roger Kupfer, who was second. Art Lightner finished third with a 142. Orie Robinson (149) and Chris Bommer (150) rounded out the top five.
Bruno DeCrease won the handicap scoring with a 131. Bob Hoffman finished with a 133. Jim Ennis was third with a 135. Bob Green was fourth with a 135. There was a tie for fifth between Rick Diefenbaugh and Tony Lira at 140.
The event also featured a best-ball scoring. Coram and Robinson prevailed with a 125. Kupfer and Lightner were second at 128. Bommer and Mercer were third at 141.
In the handicap scoring, DeCrease and John Wakim prevailed with a 115.
The Timbergrove Construction event was held on July 29th with Jim Ennis prevailing with a round of 36. He was a shot better than Mike Perring. Bob Green, DeCrease and Dick Moore rounded out the top five. All of whom finished with rounds of 38.
Ted Koski won the handicap scoring with a round of 32. Paul Carney posted a 33 to finish second.
The Elm Grove Eagles #1891 event was claimed by Ennis with a 34. DeCrease was second with a 36 and Rich Colley finished third with a 37. In the handicap scoring, Bob Hicks prevailed with a 33. Ted Koski was second with a 33.
The Orie and Mechelle Robinson 2-man scramble was held last Sunday. Lightner and Kupfer prevailed with a 131. They were nine shots better than Robbie Evans and Doug Miller. Jim Ennis and Bob Green were third with a 143.
DeCrease and Wakim won the handicap scoring with a 133. Gary Mercer and Bommer also finished with a 133.
UPCOMING SCRAMBLES
THE INAUGURAL St. C. Junior Sports Scramble will be held at Belmont Hills Country Club on Saturday, Aug. 29 with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. The entry fee is $100 per player and that includes mulligans and a skins game. The cost includes an Outback catered dinner and beverages on the course during the round. The second annual Dominick Nardo Golf Scramble will be held on Aug. 22 at Belmont Hills Country Club.
The event will have a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and the entry fee is $500 per team. Proceeds from the event go toward scholarships to be presented to St. Clairsville High School students in memory of Nardo.

THE CAMPAIGN for Moving Healthcare Forward will hold a golf scramble at Belmont Hills Country Club on Thursday, Sept. 3 with a shotgun start slated for noon. The event will be a four-person scramble and include skill contests.
Sponsorships are availble for the event and there are four levels, all of which include a team entry in the field.

The Bellaire Touchdown Club will be sponsoring its ninth annual golf outing on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Fairway River Links. The entry fee is $60 per person or $240 per team of four. The St. Joseph, Tiltonsville, Holy Name Society is sponsoring its 33rd annual Four-Man Golf Scramble on Saturday, August 15 at Fairway River Links in Rayland. Entry fee for the 7 a.m. shotgun start is $50 per golfer and includes a golf cart, and continuous food and beverages. Trophies and prizes will be awarded.
