OFF THE TEE: OV Seniors Tourney champs crowned
The annual Ohio Valley Seniors Golf Tournament was held last Monday at Belmont Hills Country Club in St. Clairsville
Champions in age groups and overall were crowned.
The age group winners were as follows:
50-59 – Dan Dailey, 69 (Gross); Larry Blake, 65 (Net).
60-64 – Dave Reasbeck, 69 (Gross); Steve Mercer, 64 (Net).
65-69 – Jack Carpenter, 77 (Gross); Dave Johnson, 66 (Net).
70-74 – James Burracchio, 78 (Gross); Jeff Schultz, 68 (Net).
75-79 – Syl Pramik, 75 (Gross); Dick Cope, 65 (Net).
80 and over – John Croskey, 76 (Gross); Clyde Morelli, 59 (Net).
Dave Reasbeck was crowned the overall winner after a tiebreaker with Dan Dailey.
The closest to the pin on the second hole went to the following:
50-59 – Ted Showalter; 60-64 – Dave Reasbeck; 65-69 – Rennie Minor; 70-74 – Dave Ogle; 75-79 – Andy Yanok; 80 and over – Bill Croskey.
The team championship went to Belmont Hills Country Club with a score of 290. The players whose scores went into that total were Reasbeck, Dr. Vic Wood, Larry Blake; Jack Carpenter.
SANDS ELECTRIC TOURNAMENT
One of the annual events that many area players look forward to is on tap for Sunday, Sept. 13 at Belmont Hills Country Club.
The 31st annual Sands Electric Company Golf Classic is expected to draw another impressive field. Thus far, 28 players are registered for the event, which utilizes a 2-man best ball scramble format.
The duo of Gary Cunningham and Joe Klempa will return intact, seeking to defend their title. The remainder of the teams will be randomly drawn at BHCC in the morning.
The event began in 1985 as the Warwood Reds Open and then switched to the Barton Braves Scramble in the 1990s.
Bill Glitch is once again serving as the tournament director.
WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB
The Wakim’s Bar event was held on Aug. 30. Rich Colley prevailed in the 18-hole event with a round of 71. Chris Bommer was second. He also checked in with a 71. Rick Richmond had a round of 72 to finish third.
Rounding out the top five were Robbie Evans (72), Bill Caldwell (72) and Gary Mercer (72). Caldwell and Mercer tied for the fifth spot.
In the handicap scoring, Steve Domyan prevailed with a round of 64. Ryan Richmond also posted a 64. Dennis Porter was third with a 65, while John Bryan was fourth with a 68. There was a tie for fifth between Duane Lescalet and Tony Campbell. Both checked in with a round of 69.
The Bordas & Bordas event was held on Aug. 26. George Melnik prevailed in the 9-hole event with a round of 35. Robbie Evans was second with a 35, while Clark Sambuco was third with a 35. The fourth 35 was posted by Bob Green and Tony Coppa was fifth with a round of 36.
In the handicap scoring, Bob Hicks was the winner with a 31. He was a shot better than Ted Koski. Dave Slonaker was third with a 32, while Dave Scollick was fourth with a 32. Terry Younkins was fifth with a 33.
SENECAVILLE SENIOR LEAGUE
The league held each week at Robins’ Ridge Golf Course saw Gander and Wickham produce the low net score at 32. Low gross went to Bickford and Bell with a 33.
The closest to the pins in the event were posted by Terry Hannahs and Bill Bell.
ACE
BOB BUTTS, the former Benwood Union, Ohio State University and NFL football player, recorded his first hole-in-one during a round of golf on Wednesday at Oglebay Park’s Palmer Course. He aced the 155-yard 13th hole, utilizing a 7 wood. The shot was witnessed by Dave Cisar, who is the head baseball coach at Magnolia, Gary Jones and Doug Smith.
SAFFIELD SCRAMBLE
The inaugural Rich Saffield Memorial Golf Scramble, which was originally scheduled for Aug. 1 and then postponed, has been rescheduled.
The event, which will benefit the Saffield Memorial Scholarship at Union Local, will be played as a senior scramble on Saturday, Sept. 15 at BecWood Hills Golf Course.
The players in the event must be 55 years and older and the entry fee is $50 per player. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
The winning team will receive $500 and there are plenty of large door prizes to be awarded during the event.

SCRAMBLES
- The Bellaire Touchdown Club will be sponsoring its ninth annual golf outing on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Fairway River Links.
The entry fee is $60 per person or $240 per team of four. The cost includes cart, lunch and beverages during the scramble and a dinner afterwards.
