Linsly grad earns Ohio Athletic Conference hoop POW for Marietta

MARIETTA — Anthony Wallace is a pretty good basketball player. He was pretty good at Linsly School and he’s continued into his collegiate career. Just last season he played a major role in helping to lead Marietta College into the NCAA Tournament and he’s seemingly picked up right where he left off. Wallace was awarded the first Ohio Athletic Conference Player of the Week after he helped the Pioneers extend their home winning streak to 39 games with two victories. He was the Pioneers’ leading scorer in both outings, averaging 21 points a game and three rebounds. He had ...

Crutchfield’s second job off to solid start in Fla.

FORT LAUDERDALE — He won at a rate few, if any, coaches do. He also had his program on cruise control, winning 30 games per season and making annual national tournament runs. After rescuing the West Liberty University men’s program from the scrap heap and elevating it to magnificent heights, Jim Crutchfield was ready for a new challenge. Crutchfield shocked many last spring when, after 13 marvelous campaigns of guiding the Hilltoppers, he accepted the head coaching position at D-II Nova Southeastern in Fort Lauderdale. He compiled a remarkable 359-61 record at West Liberty. ...

Local duo to run in D-II nationals

CALIFORNIA, Pa. — Both Megan Bateman and Shaye Beckett realized when they signed National Letter of Intents to continue their running careers at California University that they’d have the chance to compete for sports. With just one weekend left in the season, California, Pa. is preparing for the NCAA Division II national meet and both Bateman, who graduated from Union Local, and Beckett, who is from Bellaire, will be at the line as part of the team’s top seven ...

CLEVELAND -- Being an offensive lineman is a thankless task. Often times the only notoriety coming their way is being targeted for a penalty. O-lineman toil in anonymity. Bryan Fialkowski was an offensive lineman. He plied his trade extremely well, be it at Linsly School or John Carroll University. The Bridgeport native performed at an all-star level for the Blue Streaks. So much so, he was inducted into the John Carroll University Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 27, as part of a five-member class. “It's an amazing feeling going into the John Carroll Hall of Fame. COLUMBUS — In so many ways, the Ohio State Buckeyes performance Saturday was unbelievable. Obviously, their absolute domination and destruction of Michigan State, which had been tied with Ohio State atop the Big Ten East standings, was first and foremost. The immediate thought, though, as the Buckeyes piled up 35 points and 320 yards before halftime, was back to last week’s debacle at Iowa. And with that thought came questions like, ‘what if? How? Where was this performance last week?’ But, to hear offensive lineman Billy Price tell it, that’s just for the fans and media. ...

Shank ending stellar 48-year collegiate career

NEW CONCORD -- Larry Shank is one of the good guys in the world of college athletics. Make that one of the best guys. The St. Clairsville High graduate has been immersed in college sports for most of his adult life - 48 years to be exact. During those five decades, Shank has experienced a great deal of success as a coach. But all that winning pales into comparison to what he relishes the most -- people. Shank embraces the countless relationships he has made along the way and still maintains today. Shank is currently the athletic director at Muskingum University. It will be ...
