Young volunteers playing key role in Stobbs race

WHEELING - Youth is being served with this year's edition of the Lois Stobbs Memorial Veterans Day 10K Run & Walk. The eighth annual event, set for Saturday Nov. 4, is dedicated to honoring local fallen heroes. Money received over and above race expenses is donated to the West Virginia Chapter of Paralyzed Veterans of America. Youngsters ranging from all ages and from a host of different organizations are lending a helping hand to make for another successful race. Vannoy paces A-B golf team

The Alderson-Broaddus golf program has enjoyed a strong run of success in recent years. Part of that is because of the recruiting its done in the Ohio Valley. During a tournament last weekend in Xenia, the Battlers posted a seventh-place finish and two area products helped to lead the way. St. Clairsville graduate Seth Vannoy was the team’s leader. Family tradition plays big for Circosta

WOODSFIELD — Jay Circosta is now in his 50th year of coaching high school football. That is a remarkable and elongated feat. Along the way, he has coached more than 500 players, be it at Woodsfield High or now Monroe Central. The names and faces change each season, but two families have taken the field for Circosta like no others during the last half century. The Habigs (six) and Schumachers (five) have teamed up to produce 11 quality gridders for Circosta, dating back to the 1971 season. Petteway and Paige pick up special laurels

Each week several Ohio Valley standout put forth impressive efforts on a myriad of fields at the collegiate level. Two, however, gained special accolades after posting notable performances in victories last week. Steubenville graduate Shyoun Petteway was named defensive player of the week in the Great Midwest Conference after turning in an effort, which included 15 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovery from his corner spot. MOUNDSVILLE — Oliver Luck enjoyed two successful tours of duty at West Virginia University. First, as a three-year starter at quarterback. The second, as the university’s athletic director. While no longer affiliated with WVU in an official capacity, Luck will always be a Mountaineer at heart. He revisited his love affair with the school when he returned to the Ohio Valley Thursday night. BUFFALO — The wait is nearly over. Kristin Lewicki is set to become a professional hockey player. The Moundsville native reports to the Buffalo Beauts of the National Women’s Hockey League today. Practice officially commences Friday. Lewicki is already guaranteed a roster spot. Each team has 15 skaters and two goalies.
