Major League Baseball is in its stretch run with less than a week until the start of the playoffs. While big-league clubs are jockeying for positioning in pennant races, the Midland RockHounds are basking in the glory of their third consecutive Texas League championship. One of the key contributors to that squad was Wheeling Park and West Virginia University graduate Corey Walter, who saw time as a starter and reliever for the RockHounds, which is a the AA farm club of the Oakland Athletics. “The whole season was a success,” Walter said. “Not only did we win a ...

River and Shadyside in football has been a long time coming

It’s only Tuesday, but the anticipation and excitement are already reaching a high, high level. Both schools have had this date circled for weeks. They’ve even sold t-shirts to commemorate the game. For the first time since 2005, River and Shadyside are meeting on the football field. The Pilots and Tigers used to be one of the area’s best small-school rivalries, taking place in week 10 each year. For exact reasons that were never shared with me, the series was discontinued. That all changes Friday night at Flannery Field. Not much more needs to be said or ...

St. C. products helping Battlers men’s golf team

The Alderson-Broaddus golf program is still relatively new. However, it’s experienced a lot of success thus far, too. A big reason for that is because of the contribution of two former St. Clairsville Red Devils. Adam Jeffries and Seth Vannoy have been key contributors each of the last three seasons for the Battlers and that’s continued into this fall. Jeffries — who graduated high school in 2013 — enjoyed his finest collegiate outing last weekend. He finished as the runner-up medalist in the Great Midwest Fall Invitational last weekend, posting an impressive 2-day ...

Bellaire turning the corner

Don’t look now, but the Bellaire Big Reds are on a winning streak. After opening the season by dropping back-to-back games to River and Wheeling Central, Bellaire has rebounded quite well with wins over Harrison Central and John Marshall. The Big Reds basically dominated the Monarchs, pitching a shutout. Bellaire has shown it can got it done offensively with the run or pass. It used the passing game with Mason Ramsay finding speedy targets D’eondre Burney and Justyn Keyser time and time again. Last week, it was Tyson Camsky’s turn to shine on the ground. He ran for better ...

Is football in the cards for WJU?

WHEELING -- Football at Wheeling Jesuit University. Is it a possibility? Will it become a reality? If so, how soon? The Cardinals are the only member of the 12-school Mountain East Conference that doesn't have a football program. The NCAA Division II league officially began competition on Sept. 1, 2013. When the MEC was formed, Wheeling Jesuit was never given a definitive timetable to launch a football program. But there was a gentlemen's agreement the university would eventually start a grid program. Reid Amos serves as MEC commissioner. The league office is headquartered ...
