Prep Basketball Still Has A Lot To Be Sorted Out

Basketball season is in full swing. To me, that’s great news. The local basketball season is shaping up early as one of the most balanced in a long time. There doesn’t seem to be a real juggernaut and there also seems to be a lot of teams that can win a lot of games and then again they might lose a lot of games. It’s just one of those years. However, that takes nothing away from a night on the hardwood in the Ohio Valley. Obviously, prep basketball will never be as popular as football, but we’re hopeful that people will come out in force and support these teams. While, you ...

Tension could be on the rise in one Ohio Valley wrestling family this holiday season fueding as to which cousin is the better wrestler — Zack Kosky or Bryan Skoff. The cousins have a family blood line that runs deep in the sport of wreslting and is only heating up after the weekend’s end. Kosky, a 152-pounder at St. John Central, and Skoff, a 160-pounder at Bridgeport, both won their resepective weight classes this weekend. Kosky was the Green and White front runner in the Irish Invitational, pinning Magnolia’s Travis Helmick in the finals while Skoff was the first of the ...

Adversity fails to slow down Flat Out Ady

Flat Out Ady holds a special spot in owner Dean Miner’s heart. It’s not her number of Grade AA victories or the amount of her earnings. Ady’s story goes far beyond her accomplishments on the racetrack. It’s about heartache, perseverance, hope and determination. “She’s the only dog I can remember in my 18 years of owning greyhounds that I openly root for out loud,” Miner, a co-operator of the Flying Eagles-Miner Kennel at Wheeling, said. “She’s that special to me.” While fans at Wheeling have watched Ady — an October 2003 greyhound out of Flying Penske-La Killy ...

Bellaire native Fitch preparing for Hawaii Bowl

Todd Fitch is only 43 years old, but he’s already seen the country and numerous college campuses. Stops at Ohio Wesleyan, Bowling Green, West Virginia, Colorado State, Connecticut, South Carolina and Iowa State dot the Bellaire High graduate’s resume. However, now that he’s the offensive coordinator at East Carolina University under Skip Holtz, Fitch is heading to some place he’s never been. The Pirates — by virtue of finishing the season with a 7-5 record — earned themselves a spot in a bowl game. Not just any bowl game. The Pirates will board a charted jet and head to ...

Apple Lyde brings ‘A’ game to Wheeling

For the first six months of the 2007 racing season, Kiowa Apple Lyde was arguably the best distance runner at Southland Greyhound Park. A Night of Stars victory in May, a track record and 19 wins were a few of his many accomplishments. Now, Kiowa Apple Lyde is trying to make his mark at the Wheeling Island racetrack — one of the most competitive racetracks in the country. So far, he has passed the test with flying colors. An April 2005 greyhound out of WW Apple Jax-Kiowa Tom Lyde (two former Wheeling standouts), Kiowa Apple Lyde has 5 wins, 1 third and 2 fourths in his first eight ...

Mountaineers come to terms

MORGANTOWN — First, they lost to Pitt. Then, they lost their coach. The Mountaineers insist they won’t lose their bearings between now and Jan. 2 when they oppose Oklahoma in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. Talk about tumultuous times in the Mountain State! December came in like a lion, all right. It started with the most embarrassing loss in school history, a mind-numbing 13-9 meltdown to a highly inferior Pitt outfit which had little more to do than step off the bus. The fallout is ongoing and even rated a visit from Gov. James Manchin during Thursday afternoon’s practice here. ...
