Wrestlers: Looking forward to two-pound weight allowance

The holiday season can mean only one thing to wrestlers – weight allowances. Yes, every wrestler can breath a sigh of relief as weight allowances will be in affect in Ohio and West Virginia when they hit the mat next. "They feel that kids are still growing and this two-pound weight allowance helps wrestlers with their weight management program," West Virginia Wrestling Rules Interpreter Bill Welker said. Both Ohio and West Virginia will have the two-pounds beginning on Tuesday, according to Welker and Jack Regis, secretary of the local Ohio wrestling officials. I can still recall ...

Destiny on hold

CINCINNATI -- It was simply too much prosperity for one team to handle. When confronted with a 'win and you're in' scenario, the Browns were visited by the ghost of seasons' past. Sunday's bitter 19-14 loss here may have cost them a playoff berth. For sure, it makes for an unsettling week on the lakefront. "(After today), we have to depend on another set of scenarios. That's not where we wanted to be," shrugged wideout Braylon Edwards. "We wanted to win here, then go home and celebrate (the playoffs) with our fans. But we didn't get it done. WVU interim head coach got start at Salem College

While everyone has been well-informed of Bill Stewart’s coaching resume, one stop has repeatedly been omitted. The interim West Virginia University head football coach actually had a brief 2-year tour of duty at tiny Salem College back in the late 1970s under Joe Ault to start his collegiate coaching carousel, which has taken him to the University of North Carolina (1979), Marshall University (1980), William & Mary (1981-83), Navy (1984), North Carolina (1985-87), Arizona State (1988-89), Air Force (1990-93), VMI (1994-96) and the Winnipeg Blue Bombers (1997-1999) of the Canadian ...

2007: A year of success and even tragedy

It’s hard to believe that in less than 48 hours, we’ll be celebrating another new year. You might need all of that time to digest what’s ahead. It’s time for 2007 to officially be etched into our memories and time for us to make room for another year of what always starts with great anticipation, but from time-to-time takes turns for the worse. However, that’s just the way life is. When you think you’ve got it figured out, you quickly realize you don’t. That’s exactly the way it must have felt for several members of the sports community this year both locally, ...

Better competition produces better wrestlers

Anyone competing in any sport wants to be the best they can be, which is to be expected. A clique, when you have a bad kid beating up on another bad kid you think you’re good, can sometimes be used in the Ohio Valley. There’s no mistake when I say the valley doesn’t have the most competitive wrestling teams in this part of Ohio, but that’s to be expected.     However, that doesn’t have to be accepted and some of the wrestling coaches in the Ohio Valley are doing this because they want to be more competitive. ...
