Wooding making lots of history at Oberlin

OBERLIN — To say that Von Wooding has had an impressive collegiate career might be selling the former Linsly Cadet a bit short. Wooding, who is a senior for the Yeoman football program, is etching his name into Oberlin history from his linebacker position. During last Saturday’s 38-3 loss to Wabash, Wooding became the second-leading tackler in Oberlin history. In the game, Wooding recorded 13 tackles, raising his career total to 296. He’s now 416 behind the all-time leader. Also during the game, Wooding, who is a team captain for the Yeoman, had a forced fumble and a tackle ...

Growing pains not unexpected for Mountaineers

WHEELING - “Tough times don’t last, tough people do.” Be it in life or sports, that is one of my favorite credos. These are definitely tough times for WVU football. The Mountaineers have lost three straight games, the latest coming at Oklahoma where the No. 5-ranked Sooners breezed to a 52-14 triumph. WVU is now 3-4 on the campaign with another acid test looming. Coach Neal Brown’s young and banged up squad must travel to Waco to face Baylor Thursday. Like Oklahoma, the Bears are unbeaten and ranked No. 14 nationally. WVU had Saturday off. A bye week can be a good thing. ...

WLU quarterback sidelined for year with broken wrist

Zach Phillips was enjoying a most productive season. Actually, the former Wheeling Park quarterback was enjoying a brilliant career at West Liberty since he arrived via the transfer route from Gannon. Unfortunately, Phillips’ season has come to an end. Phillips finishes his Hilltoppers career, which spanned just 16 games, with an impressive 3,389 yards passing and 30 touchdowns. He also rushed for 519 yards and 8 more scores. ...

OV products shining on Buckeye diamond

The Ohio State Buckeyes do not officially begin their 2020 baseball season until Valentine’s Day. However, the preparations are well under way for the reigning Big Ten champions with three former Ohio Valley standouts looking to make a contribution. The annual Scarlet and Gray three-game series, which is always a highlight of the fall season, got under way Thursday on Nick Swisher Field inside Bill Davis Stadium and will continue throughout the weekend. A pair of Toronto Red Knights are making a serious push for action. Nolan Clegg is a true sophomore and coming off a solid ...

Crutchfield has never forgotten his grooming

MOUNDSVILLE — He is the architect of two basketball powers. He has the highest winning percentage of any college basketball coach who has been in the business for at least 10 years. He is well-grounded and one of the nicest individuals you will ever meet. He is Jim Crutchfield. The former West Liberty University and current Nova Southeastern hoop coach was the featured speaker Thursday night at the annual Marshall County Chamber of Commerce dinner at the former state penitentiary. Just as he does on the hardwood, Crutchfield captivated the large turnout by mixing his basketball ...
