UL spikers remain perfect on season

MORRISTOWN — One of the marks of any good team, regardless of sport, is an ability to persevere when the chips are down.

It’s a trait that’s served Union Local’s volleyball team well thus far this season. And it’s one third-year head coach Kaye Sechrest stays with the Jets for a few more months.

Union Local’s tough-mindendness came into play during a tense second set Thursday evening, one that saw the Jets prevail, 25-21; part of a straight-set triumph that also included wins of 25-9 and 25-13. The victory against St. Clairsville improved UL to 6-0 and left Sechrest smiling from ear to ear following the match inside “The Hangar.”

“It feels good,” she beamed. “We’re just making little mistakes, here and there. But I can’t be upset with the results.

“They’re playing well. They like each other and they play as a team. That’s the one thing, they don’t care who gets the points, they just wanna win.”

And that’s all the Jets have been doing during the first two weeks of the season. But to keep it going Sechrest knows it’s going to take a similar attitude, one that’s been focused on teamwork and hardwork.

“They come, they practice and they stay together as a group,” she stated.

No truer was that then when the Jets trailed 17-14 in the second set.

The Red Devils (1-4), after struggling mightily early, found their groove and and finally overcame 10 ties in the set to grab some breathing room. But Sechrest called time to try and stem the tide.

“I don’t even remember what I told them,” she laughed. “I really don’t. I probably said something along the lines of let’s keep it together and you’ve got this.”

Whatever emerged from her mouth worked. The Jets scored seven straight points en route to stealing St. C.’s momentum and winning the set.

“We had a couple real unfortunate errors that got us in the hole again and we couldn’t get the momentum back quick enough,” St. Clairsville head coach Christa Truchan said.

The Red Devils drew to within 22-20, but UL went ahead 24-20 before Torre Kildow punctuated the set with a kill.

“I think the biggest thing is the girls let me and Julie (Kildow), my assistant coach, get rattled,” Sechrest said. “They don’t get rattled. They play and let us be the ones.”

After the close call in the second, the Jets jumped out to a 7-2 lead in the third set, going up 9-3 on Kildow’s spike.

She finished with 15 assists, nine digs and 10 kills. Casey Kildow ended up with 20 assists, nine digs and seven aces.

Baylee Rex added eight digs and six kills, while Lacy Bilyeu had 15 digs and Chloe Doud had five kills.

They’re all just solid players right now,” Sechrest said. “We have some hard matches coming up, so we don’t wanna get complacent. We just want to keep working.”

Paige Sefsick had 12 digs for the Red Devils, while Sydney Porter and Lydia Wees each had five kills.

“We just have to go back to the drawing board and continue to work hard,” Truchan said.
