Brown drops 40 in Buckeye Local win over Edison

CONNORVILLE – Buckeye Local celebrated Senior Night in grand fashion Tuesday by rolling past Edison, 75-54.

The night proved extra special for one Panther senior.

Athletic forward Mason Brown singed the nets for a career-high 40 points. The 6-3 dandy tallied 24 markers prior to intermission.

“I have to thank my teammates. They executed the offense very well,” Brown said. “It was great to have a big win on Senior Night.”

Brown’s previous high was 28 markers.

The lopsided triumph was the sixth in eight starts for coach Chris Heaton’s team. The Panthers welcome Bellaire Friday night in search of a repeat win.

Buckeye Local scored the game’s first 13 points and were never seriously challenged the balance of the night. Edison didn’t dent the scorecard until 4:51 was left in the opening quarter.

The Panthers stretched the margin to 27-10 at the initial quarter pole. The hosts maintained a 36-23 upperhand at intermission.

Heaton’s well-drilled quint erased any hopes of an Edison comeback by opening the second half on a 12-5 surge to build a 20-point bulge. Buckeye Local nursed a 53-38 advantage entering the final eight minutes.

“It was nice to get off to such a good start. It set the tone,” Heaton said. “I was real happy with how we started the second half. We stress how important the first three minutes of the second half are.

“It is a night Mason will never forget. He was really impressive tonight and he did it very unselfishly. The offense did a great job on the perimeter to get him the ball in places where he could score,” he added.

“This was a nice way to bounce back from a tough loss at Shadyside. Hopefully, we can keep the momentum going. Bellaire will be a test Friday.”

Fellow senior Jake Mayle was Brown’s top support. The 6-4 standout finished with 15 markers.

Edison fell to 1-4 on the campaign.

The loss spoiled a strong performance from Gage Cline. The 6-5 sophomore post netted 29 markers. Owen Howell added 10 lightings for the Wildcats.

Buckeye Local opened the game with a fullcourt press. It paid dividends. The Panthers turned the Jefferson Countians over seven times in the frame in building a 17-point lead after eight minutes.

Edison ended the contest with 17 turnovers. Buckeye Local took great care of the ball, committing just three turnovers.

The Wildcats also had a rough night at the charity stripe, meshing only five of 15 attempts.

Buckeye Local won the prelim. The young Panthers are also 6-2 on the season.
