Area basketball players, coaches honored as All-Eastern District

As the basketball season continues to wind down, the post-season accolades begin to ramp up.

The Ohio Prep Sports Writers Association released its All-Eastern District squads for boys and girls basketball on Saturday with several area players recognized.

Three players and three coaches, however, garnered special accolades after producing impressive campaigns.

The Union Local girls produced another impressive season, finishing at 25-2 and advancing to the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive season.

Fueling the Jets was senior center Reagan Vinskovich. The West Liberty signee, who was named a finalist for the prestigious Ms. Basketball earlier in the week, was named the Division III Eastern District Player of the Year.

Vinskovich – a three-time All-Ohioan – averaged 22 points and 10 rebounds a game for the Jets. She surpassed the 2,000-point barrier in the district tournament and finished her career with 2,046 points and 1,076 rebounds. Both are Union Local school records.

Vinskovich’s head coach – Scooter Tolzda – was named co-Division III Coach of the Year. In two seasons at the helm of the UL girls, Tolzda has produced a 50-6 record. He surpassed the 500-career-win mark in November. He guided the Jets to an OVAC and Buckeye 8 title for the second straight season.

In Division IV, River put forth a season to remember, finishing 24-3. The Pilots top player and their head coach were honored.

Junior Kelsey Harlan, who averaged 20 points, four rebounds and six assists a game, was named the Eastern District’s Co-Player of the Year. She shared it with Malvern’s Maddie Powers, who averaged 25.8 points a game.

Veteran head coach Rick Isaly, who guided the Pilots to the OVAC 2A and MOVL crown as well as a spot in the Eastern District championship game, was named the Coach of the Year.

BOYS

Martins Ferry had one of the area’s strongest seasons and a key cog in that success was senior Denali Jackson, who was named the Division III Co-Eastern District Player of the Year.

Jackson, who transferred to Ferry from Linsly, opened his career as a Purple Rider with a triple-double against St. Clairsville. He didn’t slow down from there. He went on to average 22.7 points, 10.7 rebounds and 5.7 assists a game.

Jackson shared the honor with Malvern’s J’Allen Barrino, who scored at a 16.6 points per game clip.

In Division IV, River garnered the top seed in the district and its head coach – Mark Romick – was named the coach of the year.

Romick led the Pilots to an 18-4 regular season record, which included an OVAC Class 2A and MOVL championship.
