Wheeling Central’s Young to lead West Virginia

Mike Young is no stranger to the OVAC All-Star Football Game. The veteran head coach will be making his third appearance in the late-July contest. He coached Ohio in 1991 with his St. Clairsville staff and West Virginia in 2013 with the Wheeling Central staff.

Joining Young are members of his Wheeling Central staff. They include: Jim Wolfe, Jason Rine, Shannon Kuchinski, Phil Pest, Mario DiBias, John Tankovits and Dylan Baker.

The following is a capsule look at the West Virginia coaching staff:

MIKE YOUNG – In 17 seasons at Wheeling Central, Young has compiled an OVAC Hall of Fame career by winning 175 of his 225 games. He has led the Maroon Knights to eight state championships (2005-07, 2010-11, 2017-19). They’ve also claimed three OVAC championships (2006-07, 2022).

His overall record at St. Clairsville and Wheeling Central is an impressive 226-91.

Young coached St. Clairsville to a pair of OVAC Tennis title (1983-84) and served as head pro at the Ohio Valley Raquet Club. He led the St. Clairsville boys basketball program to the district finals and also served as head boys basketball coach at Ohio University Eastern for one season.

Young and his wife, Carol, have three sons, John, Jason and Justin, and a daughter, Whitney. They also have three grandkids.

“It’s an honor and privilege to coach in this game,” Young said. “I remember when Rudy and Sam Mumley were involved. It’s still all about the kids, though.”

Young said he is excited to be a part of it again.

“This game has a lot of history and tradition.”

JIM WOLFE – Wolfe is a 1965 graduate of Wheeling Central where he lettered four years. He has served as an assistant for the Maroon Knights for 39 years coaching the offensive line and defensive tackles. He started his coaching career at Blessed Trinity and St. John’s. He has been a part of 11 W.Va. state championship teams and four OVAC titlists. He and his wife, Joyce, are the parents of Dr. Matthew Hartzell and his wife, Dr. Jennifer Hartzell. They have two grandsons, Jordan and Simon.

JASON RINE – Rine is in his 32nd season of coaching in the Ohio Valley. After one season at Brooke, he returned to his alma mater, Wheeling Central. He served as wide receiver and secondary coach on JT Thomas’s staff, winning state titles in 2000, 2002 and 2004. In 2005, he became the offensive coordinator and the Maroon Knights have won eight state crowns. He was the WTOV Offensive Coordinator of the Year in 2007 and 2019. He and his wife, Heather, have three sons, Isaac, Jacob and Levi.

SHANNON KUCHINSKI – Kuchinski was a member of the 1993 Steubenville Catholic football team that captured the Ohio Division V state championship. He was also a two-time state track qualifier and played Rugby at Wheeling Jesuit University. He has served as the Maroon Knights defensive coordinator for the past six seasons and been an assistant for 11. He was the WTOV Defensive Coach of the Year in 2020. He and his wife, Kelly, have three children, daughter, Kendall, and sons, Camden and Easton.

PHIL PEST – Pest is a 1973 graduate of Wheeling Central and a 1977 graduate of Bethany. He earned three letters for the Bison and was all-conference three times. He taught at Ohio County Schools for a dozen years and at Buckeye Local for 17. He also served as head coach of the Panthers football program for three seasons and has coached at Wheeling Central for 14 seasons. He and his wife, Jan, have three children,Megan, Trevor and Shannen.

MARIO DIBIAS – DiBias is a 1992 graduate of Wheeling Central where he was a three-year letterwinner. He lettered twice at Bethany. He has coached football for 21 years with stops at Morgantown High, Bishop Donahue, Buckeye Local, Bridgeport, Brooke and Wheeling Central. He and his wife, Lisa, have two children, daughter Mia, and son, Nico.

JOHN TANKOVITS – Another Wheeling Central grad and former standout player, Tankovits has been with the Maroon Knights for two seasons, with other stops at Bridgeport and Junior Knights Football. He also graduated from West Liberty University and obtained his master’s degree at Ohio University. He is engaged to his fiance, Tiffany.

DYLAN BAKER – Baker played in the 2017 OVAC All-Star Game, representing Wheeling Central. He was a two-year letterman at Wheeling University and has served as an assistant at his alma mater for one season. He is the son of Bill and Becky Bolon and Troy and Jody Baker.
