Seven players rewarded with first-team status

COLUMBUS — The Ohio Valley is well-represented on the Ohio Division IV and Division V all-state football teams. A total of seven players — four in Division V — were rewarded for their fine seasons with first-team status.

In Division IV, St. Clairsville’s Dino Burk and the Steubenville tandem of Isaac Hill and Brody Saccoccia received the highest honor.

Burk, the Red Devils 5-10, 170-pound junior tailback, ran for 1,378 yards and 22 touchdowns on 143 carries for an average of 9.64 yards per carry and 137.8 yards per game. He also caught five passes for 39 yards and returned a kickoff 75 yards for a TD. He finished the season with 132 points as the Red Devils won one game in the playoffs before falling. Burk was voted a tri-Eastern District Offensive Player of the Year.

Hill, who is committed to Bowling Green State University, was cited as a wide receiver/tight end. The 6-3, 212-pounder caught 61 passes for 892 yards and seven touchdowns as Big Red advanced to the Final Four. He also carried the ball 11 times for 132 yards and a TD. He holds all of the Steubenville receiving records. Hill was a tri-Eastern District Offensive Player of the Year.

Saccoccia, the grandson of legendary Steubenville head coach Reno, logged 103 tackles during his junior season, with 62 of them being solo. He recovered two fumbles and intercepted a pass. He was voted the co-Eastern District Defensive Player of the Year.

Beaver Local senior quarterback Austin Cline was the lone player on the second team offense, while senior offensive linemen Perry Patrone (St. Clairsville) and Javin Harper (Steubenville) headlined the third team offense. Defensively, St. Clairsville senior linebacker Brennan Stout and Steubenville senior lineman Peyton Gorby were third-teamers.

Earning honorable mention were Steubenville senior quarterback Ayden Manning; Indian Creek junior running back Zion McGee; Steubenville senior running back Savier Faulks; St. Clairsville senior wide receiver Cole Thoburn; Beaver Local junior wide receiver Brock Seevers; St. Clairsville senior offensive linemen Griffin Fogle and JR Adams; Steubenville junior offensive lineman Ben Burghey; Steubenville senior defensive lineman Santonio Brown; East Liverpool junior defensive lineman D’Shawn Kirby; Steubenville senior linebackers Elijah Mullins and Sabron Felton; Indian Creek junior linebacker Justin Vergona; East Liverpool junior linebacker Trent Davis; and Beaver Local junior linebacker Kane Curran.

In Division V, Barnesville received a trio of first-teamers in quarterback Casey Carpenter; defensive lineman Marshall Meade; and linebacker Hines Ford. Harrison Central’s Cam McAfee was a first team defensive back.

Carpenter, a first-year junior starter, guided the Shamrocks to a 12-0 record before they fell in the regional semifinals. The lefty threw for 1,889 yards and 26 touchdowns — both single-season records — this fall with just two interceptions. He was also a tri-Eastern District Offensive Player of the Year.

Meade was a two-way performer in the trenches, but was a steady force at his defensive end spot. The junior charted 62 tackles, 12 tackles for lost yards, seven quarterback sacks, forced two fumbles and recovered one. He was also the starting center.

Ford, an under-sized linebacker at 5-8, 160, was an integral part of the Shamrocks’ stingy defense. He logged a team-keading 84 tackles, with 10 of those coming behind the line of scrimmage. He also charted 3.5 sacks, forced a fumble, recovered two and broke up a pair of passes.

Ford was a co-Eastern District Defensive Player of the Year.

McAfee, a junior for the Huskies, put up some big numbers in all three phases of the game — offense, defense and special teams.

Defensively, he recorded 70 tackles, of which half were solo stops, picked off half-a-dozen passes, had four TFLs, had a like number of forced fumbles and fell on two. Offensively, he had 25 receptions for 295 yards and a TD, while rushing 27 times for 214 yards and three TDs. He also returned six kickoffs for an average of 44.7 yards, with two TDs.
