Purple Rider girls take down Redskins in Buckeye 8 championship

WINTERSVILLE — Martins Ferry (13-4) scored twice in the second inning and added an insurance run in the third, then held off the host Indian Creek Redskins for the Buckeye 8 championship in a 3-2 win.

Giana Chirpas doubled for Martins Ferry while Abby Snedker drove in a run and went the distance inside the circle. She struck out five, walked one and scattered five hits.

Trinity Taylor took the loss, collecting five Ks and issuing one free pass. She also tripled.

Barnesville 14, Shadyside 2

SHADYSIDE — The Shamrocks turned up the heat to end their Wednesday meetup with the Tigers in five innings.

After two scoreless innings, Barnesville scored four in the third, eight in the fourth and two in the fifth to stack up the runs.

Ellie Thompson tallied two doubles to drive in three. Abigail Johnson equaled Thompson’s RBI total, and stole two bases. Peyton Loudin had two RBI of her own.

Ella Betts pitched all five, striking out seven.

Taylor Fulton drove in both of Shadyside’s runs while pitching the whole game for the home team.

Union Local 9, St. Clairsville 2

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The visiting Jets needed no time to ramp up Wednesday against the Red Devils, scoring five in the top of the first to propel them to a road victory.

Laken Vinskovich smacked two doubles as part of a three-hit, three-RBI day for Union Local. Kylie Stidd pitched the complete game on the mound, striking out six and picking up the win.

Alli Kellaway also tripled and knocked in a runner for the Jets.

Noel Habig drove in both of the Red Devil runs.

BASEBALL

Wheeling Central 15, Martins Ferry 1

WHEELING — It was an emphatic victory on senior day for the Maroon Knights in a homestand win against the Purple Riders.

Zayne Rosnick had two knocks and drove in four for the Knights. Seth Cover had two RBI of his own. Braxton Billick had two hits and two stolen bases. Gary Hatfield, Brayden Cover and Landon Prager also each had two hits.

Turner Krol collected the Riders’ lone RBI.

WOODSFIELD — The Shamrocks (17-3) bounced back from their OVAC Class 3A tournament loss with a sweep of the host Seminoles.

Barnesville pushed a run across the plate in the bottom of the seventh in the opener, which was the completion of a suspended game from earlier this season. Jaxon Wiley drove in the game-winning runs with one of his three hits. Max Miller and Reese Stephen also recorded three-hit games and drove in a run each.

In the regularly scheduled game, Keegan Martin picked up his second mound win of the day with three Ks in five innings. He struck out two in relief in the opener.

Ayden Van Horn doubled and tripled for the Shamrocks. Stephen singled twice. Both knocked in a run.

Caedyn Silva singled and doubled for Monroe Central.
