BARNESVILLE — When a team scores at the end of the first half and gets the ball to start the second, it has a chance to put some distance between itself and the opposition. Barnesville did just that Friday night before an overflow crowd at Shamrock Stadium.
The Shamrocks erupted for 22 points in a 50-second span of the third quarter to turn a tight contest into a 50-6 blowout of the Big Reds for their 28th consecutive regular season victory and their 13th straight at home on the artificial surface.
Following a 30-minute weather delay at the outset, Barnesville (2-0) found itself in a dogfight with Bellaire in the first half. Leading 14-6 with time winding down before the intermission break, quarterback Casey Carpenter snuck in from a yard out to cap an 11-play, 67-yard drive that chewed up nearly five minutes. Evan Lough’s PAT made it 14-6 at the break.
“I don’t know what it was in the first half but we were all over the place,” Barnesville head coach Blake Allen said of the early lackluster performance. “It might have been the emotions surrounding senior night. It was uncharacteristic of us … penalties and turnovers.
“I thought we responded like champions,” he added. “I was really proud of our senior leadership to get us going.”
Taking the second-half kickoff, the Shamrocks needed just seven plays to go 59 yards as Carpenter found Bradey McIntire on an 18-yard hookup and Lough made it 21-6. After a quick three-and-out by the Big Reds, Carpenter and McIntire hooked up for the third time in the game, this one from 50 yards out straight down the middle of the field as the margin increased to 28-6 after another Lough placement.
On Bellaire’s first snap from scrimmage, Michael Dipple’s pass into the left flat was picked off by Eli Messenger who went 25 yards the other way. Carpenter and McIntire combined for the two-point conversion and a 36-6 count that kicked in the OHSAA 30-point mercy rule with 7:30 on the third quarter clock.
“Bradey is a weapon,” Allen said of his senior tight end. “He has a lot of speed and he blocks his tail off for us. When we call his number, he is ready to make plays.”
“They’re great,” Bellaire head coach Mark Bonar said of Barnesville. “They are classy, too.”
Trey Toliver powered his way into the end zone from 16 yards early in the fourth quarter and Evan Carpenter got into the scoring act with a 35-yard scamper. Lough added his sixth and seventh PAT kicks.
While the offense was keeping the scoreboard operator busy, the Barnesville defense kept Bellaire off the scoreboard. In fact, the Shamrocks limited the Big Reds to minus 1 yard rushing on 18 attempts. Dipple completed 7-of-19 passes for 93 yards with the aforementioned INT.
“Our defense played outstanding the entire game,” Allen praised. “Our offense was sputtering in the first half and our defense kept us in there. They didn’t give up a score. We had a goal line stand but then fumbled in the end zone and they recovered. Hat’s off to the defense and the coaches for getting them prepared.”
After holding Bellaire three times from the 1, the Big Reds’ Quentin Scott fell on a loose ball in the end zone for the lone Bellaire score. The extra point was blocked.
Casey Carpenter passed for 117 yards and the trio of TDs on 10-of-12 accuracy. He connected on his final nine attempts. McIntire hauled in five catches for 91 and the three six-pointers. Tooiver led a balanced rushing attack with 73 yards. Evan Carpenter added 48, one more than Koby Jones. Casey Carpenter ran for 34.
Barnesville remains at home next week as Buckeye Trail (2-0) visits. The Warriors outscored Harrison Central, 44-41, last night at Wagner Field in Cadiz. Bellaire, meanwhile, hosts Bishop Tonnos from Canada.
