Steubenville boys, girls sweep team titles at Shadyside Relays

BELLAIRE — The Steubenville boys and girls track teams flexed their muscles Saturday during the annual Shadyside Relays at cloud-covered Nelson Field. The Big Red boys compiled 119 points to 65 for runner up Linsly, while the girls scored 113 to outdistance Weir which had 64.

The event was held at the Bellaire facility due to a hillside slip that destroyed a portion of the Fleming Field oval.

“I thought our kids came out and competed really well today,” Steubenville head coach Andy Kidwell said. “We had quite a few personal bests and as we get closer to the OVAC and district meets, that was great to see.

“We had some kids fill in in some events they don’t normally do and they performed very well,” he added. “The kids really picked each other up.

“The upperclassmen’s leadership is really helping the younger kids develop,” Kidwell continued. “It was a great team effort and a great meet for us.”

GIRLS

Steubenville won five titles as Kaycee King continued her strong start to her career. The freshmen won the 100 in 12.78 seconds and set a personal best in the 200 with a clocking of 26.63. She also anchored the winning 4×100 and 4×200 relay teams. The 4×1 of Za’Herryah Herring, Laila Reed, Terionnah Bickerstaff and King broke the tape in 51.55 and the 4×2 won with a time of 1:52.21. It included Cianna Scurry, Adrianna Crabtree, Reed and King.

Bri Hudson won the discus with a heave of 134-feet, 10-inches, which was a half-inch better than Caldwell’s Gwyn Lori, who won the shot with a meet record of 42-5.5. That broke a 2012 mark of 42-1 set by St. Clairsville’s Alyssa Robinson.

Weir had a pair of champs in Maleea Faulks who leaped 4-10 to win the high jump. The Red Riders foursome of Olivia Shetler, Lea Young, Madlyn Cramer and Naomi Young ran the 4×800 in 10:28.50.
