Howell, Seminoles ‘D’ lead win against Magnolia
NEW MARTINSVILLE –Monroe Central arranged one of its toughest slates in the Jonathan ‘Fin’ Calder coaching era hoping it’d prepare the ‘Noles for the playoffs.
While four weeks remain to see how it shakes out in Region 23, Monroe secured a seventh straight win over Magnolia 47-12, at Alumni Field at Bill Stewart Stadium, Friday night with a dominant effort from all three phases.
“Our line play allowed us to get the run game going, the defense came up with some big stops, and special teams blocked a punt for a touchdown,” said Calder. “We got back to ‘Noles football’ after a tough last two weeks.”
For Magnolia coach Craig Mason, in his third season directing his alma mater, the learning curve continues for an 0-4 record Blue Eagles squad, which allowed four first quarter TDs and never recovered.
Central wasted no time getting on the board after forcing the hosts into a 3-and-out. From the 44, junior quarterback Cooper Howell found Corbin Farnsworth in the right flat and the junior tight end covered the final 46 untouched at 8:47.
Reliable senior Wyatt Cohen drilled the PAT after the first of seven ‘Noles TDs.
Farnsworth, one of several MC defensive demons, blocked a punt inside the 20 on Magnolia’s next series and freshman Carter Frye scooped up the oval at the 14 and ran it in at 7:34. Cohen’s boot made it 14-0.
Magnolia sophomore flyer Lucas Anderson had the Blue Eagle faithful on their feet on the ensuing kick, slipping a couple defenders on the MC sideline on his way to an 87-yard kickoff return. The bonus try failed, but it was 14-6 only 15 seconds later.
“We had success with Cooper (Howell) using some play action because with his speed he’s more suitable on the shorter stuff,” noted Calder, who saw his QB throw for 171 yards and three TDs, while he ran for a 68-yard TD.
The Seminoles, host to Shenandoah, Friday, made it 21-6 at 4:43 when junior Max Demchak hauled in a 10-yard Howell aerial. Cohen’s kick was true.
Howell completed a 4-TD first quarter for the visitors with a 68-yard dash, weaving his way from the left side of the field to the right with 54 seconds showing.
Demchak made a great effort as the holder on Cohen’s PAT as the lead grew to 28-6.
Freshman Jett Kaiser added a fifth Seminoles TD on a reception from Howell covering 53 yards as he eluded two defenders with slick moves at the hosts’ 35, and later, near the 10. The PAT kick was wide but it was 34-6 at 7:02.
Demchak pulled in a seven-yard TD strike from Howell with :28 remaining in the half. It was set up with Howell finding AJ Rutter on passes covering 55 and 18.
Magnolia refused to fold and senior QB Kingston Christen found classmate Finn Loy for a 47-yard scoring as time expired for a 41-12 intermission.
Monroe, which lost outstanding junior linebacker Owen Howard for the season with a knee injury in practice, opened the third with a seven-play 50-yard drive as the hosts attempted an onside kick to start the second half. Kaiser and Rutter did the bulk of the ground work to make it 47-12 at 7:53.
Standouts in the trenches for MC were juniors Ashton Lumbatis, Drew Landefeld, senior Lukes Stiver, sophomore Brayden Baker, and Farnsworth, while Magnolia received solid efforts from junior Ethaniel Harlan, who had 98 rush yards; Hunter Cooley, and Loy, who had 97 yards receiving.
The Blue Eagles remain at home Friday against rival Tyler Consolidated.
