Nineteenth century quilts from Ohio discussed at Watt Center in Barnesville

BARNESVILLE — Terry Tickhill Terrell is coming to The Watt Center for a second time in 2025.

She will be speaking at 6 p.m. Thursday. Doors at the center, located at 515 Watt Ave. in Barnesville, will open at 5 p.m. A donation of $5 will support the work of The Watt Center.

“All are welcome for an evening that will surely be enjoyable,” the center said in a news release.

Ohio quilters are, and always have been, a highly productive lot, according to the release. The range of 19th century Ohio quilt styles was broad, and definite variations in the styles were popular in different parts of the state. While this presentation will provide an overview of the popular quilt types made throughout the state, there will be a focus, where possible, on quilts from the Ohio Valley and southeastern part of the state. Settlement patterns, ethnic differences, transportation networks and the role of historical events will be tied to the popularity of quilt patterns over time. The research of various quilt historians and the Ohio Quilt Research Project will be highlighted to help answer the question: “What are quilt historians and what do they do?” Most importantly, there will be a lot of pictures and a few examples of beautiful 19th century quilts.
