School behind bars — For incarcerated Florida students, online classes have been a disaster

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — To earn his freedom, 15-year-old Cayden Gillespie had to complete three school assignments a day. But school had gone virtual for Cayden and other incarcerated young people in Florida. And sometimes, he didn’t understand it. One day last summer, he kept failing an online pre-algebra test. There were too many words to read. He didn’t know how to find the value of x. And there were no math teachers to show him. “I couldn’t figure it out, and it kept failing me,” Cayden says. He asked the adult supervising the classroom for help. “She didn’t ...

The NCAA imposed a multimillion-dollar fine on Michigan and suspended football coach Sherrone Moore for a third game on Friday for a sign-stealing scandal that has overshadowed college football’s most successful program for nearly two years. Here’s what you need to know: What is the scandal about? Reports surfaced in 2023 of a scheme run by now-former Michigan staffer Connor Stalions. The scheme involved a network of Stalions’ associates — dubbed the “KGB” — attending games and recording opposing team sidelines to capture play-calling signals. The NCAA said it found ...

With playoffs at stake, rough driving limits could be tested at Richmond

NASCAR playoff desperation reached a controversial peak at Richmond Raceway last year. At the mercy of securing a victory to make the 16-driver field that competes for the Cup championship, Austin Dillon wrecked Joey Logano and Denny Hamlin in the final two corners of the last lap to claim his first win in nearly two years. The celebration was short-lived as NASCAR revoked Dillon’s playoff eligibility three days later in determining the Richard Childress Racing driver “crossed a line” with rough driving. “NASCAR drew a line in the sand,” Hamlin said Friday. “They’re ...
