Delegate Ryan Weld, R-Brooke, will move to the upper chamber of the state Capitol in January, as voters elected him to represent West Virginia’s 1st Senate District, unofficial results showed late Tuesday. “I am truly overwhelmed by this,” Weld said while celebrating. “It is just such a relief to see that the work that my wife and I put into all of this has culminated in this victory.” Preliminary results late Tuesday showed Weld with 21,056 votes, while incumbent Sen. WHEELING — Delegates Erikka Storch and Shawn Fluharty of Ohio County will return to the state Capitol in January after both were re-elected by voters on Tuesday. Final, unofficial election night tallies in the race for two seats representing the 3rd Delegate District showed Storch, a Republican, receiving 11,970 of the votes cast; and Fluharty, a Democrat, 8,915. Republican Scott Reed, the second GOP candidate in the race, captured 8,224 votes. There was no second Democrat candidate. Maroney takes Second District Senate seat

GLEN DALE — Republican Dr. Mike Maroney will replace outgoing West Virginia state Sen. Jeff Kessler in January, according to unoffical election night results. “I am very humbled and very excited by this. I am really looking forward to going to Charleston to make a difference,” Maroney said in reaction to his win. Gruzinskas takes Marshall County Commission seat

MOUNDSVILLE — A former sheriff will soon take on a new role to serve the Marshall County community. John “Big John” Gruzinskas, a Democrat, ousted Marshall County Commission President Stanley Stewart for his commission seat Tuesday by more than 3,000 votes. Gruzinskas received 8,150 votes, while Stewart received 4,798. Gruzinskas retired from the West Virginia State Police with 25 years of service before being elected sheriff twice, in 2004 and 2008. MOUNDSVILLE — A hotly contested race for seats on Moundsville’s city council ended with incumbent David Haynes retaining his seat and Judy Hunt and former Councilman Phil Remke joining the fold. Hunt replaces Paul “Dude” Haynes, who is David Haynes’ brother, in the 1st Ward, while Remke will take Simms’ at-large seat. OVRTA bus levies approved in Wheeling, Bethlehem and Benwood

WHEELING — Bus service will continue for residents in Wheeling, Bethlehem and Benwood until 2020 under the Ohio Valley Regional Transit Authority. Voters strongly supported levies in each location, with unofficial results showing a 74 percent vote in Wheeling at a total of 8,288 to 2,856; 77 percent in Bethlehem, with 1,094 votes against 321; and Benwood with 83 percent approval, at a total of 360 to 74.
