Caldwell product splendid in OAC shootout thriller

To the victor go the spoils. When you win a wild and wacky game like Marietta College did against Capital last Saturday, a lot of spoils come your way. At the center of the victory was a former Ohio Valley Athletic Conference standout. Caldwell High product Tanner Clark, who helped lead the Redskins to multiple playoff berths, was very impressive against Capital last week en route to a myriad of recognition. Clark etched his name into the Marietta College record book with six touchdowns, which ties for the most in a single game. En route to the end zone, Clark racked up 311 ...

WJU gridders ready to take home field

WHEELING — There will be live college football in the city of Wheeling on Saturday afternoon. Wheeling Jesuit University — fresh off a scrimmage at FCS member Cornell — will make its official debut against Hocking College with kickoff slated for 1 p.m. at Bishop Schmitt Field. “We’re ready,” Bruney said. “We’re hoping for a good crowd, good support and that we play well. Our main focus is to compete hard. We’re a young team and we’re going to make mistakes, but we want to make sure we are conducting ourselves the right way.” For Bruney, last weekend ...

OV opens its heart for VB stroke victim

LISBON — I have said repeatedly the Ohio Valley is a special place to live for when tragedy strikes the local response is swift and powerful. Tragedy befell an OVAC volleyball team this summer. Lauren Thomas, a junior for Beaver Local, suffered a stroke July 14 while attending a volleyball camp with her team at Youngstown State University. Juniors in high school are not supposed to be stroke victims. Such an occurrence is a sobering experience. Thomas was taken to a local hospital for emergency surgery and later transferred to Akron’s Children’s Hospital for additional ...

Buckeyes’ victory has plenty to feel good about

COLUMBUS — First and foremost, let me begin this by saying I realize Saturday’s opponent, Oregon State, is coming off a 1-11 season in 2017. Immediately that tempers some of the excitement surrounding the Buckeyes’ 77-31 victory against the Beavers before 102,169 fans inside of Ohio Stadium. Let’s put the opponent aside for a moment and look solely at work produced by the Buckeyes and interim head coach Ryan Day. With the amount of talent that the Buckeyes trot out onto the field — at seemingly every position — it doesn’t take long to realize that this team has ...

O’Donnell starts foundation

If you want to get something done, sometimes you may have to simply take a leap of faith. Patrick O’Donnell — a 2010 Shadyside High School graduate — did just that in March when he walked into Chase Bank and started The Cindy O’Donnell Foundation in memory of his mother, who had died on Christmas Eve of 2009 after a short bout with cancer. “I started the foundation to help make sure my mom’s name remained active in the community,” O’Donnell said. “She always giving back to the community in some way even though she wasn’t originally from there. Whether it was ...

Local hoop coaches bid to copy success of grid counterparts

WEIRTON — Coaches are thieves. If they like something another coach is doing they make it their own. The Ohio Valley Football Coaches Association is a viable and united network of grid coaches. It is driven by the likes of Reno Saccoccia, Mike Young, Ty Fleming, Dave Bruney and Andrew Connor among others. That being the case, two veteran and successful boys’ hoop head coaches are leading a charge to establish a similar association for basketball. Weir’s Mike Granato and Steubenville’s Mike Haney have been meeting with some area coaches to make such a union come to fruition. ...
