Pittsburgh’s Texture Contemporary Ballet to Perform at Towngate

WHEELING — Oglebay Institute welcomes the Texture Contemporary Ballet to Towngate Theatre for a captivating performance at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 27.

Based out of Pittsburgh, Pa., Texture is both unique and inviting — presenting authentic and dynamic movement based in classical ballet. Texture is made up of classically trained professional ballet dancers who have danced and trained at some of the top ballet companies and schools in America. These passionate performers break through preconceived notions of ballet while upholding high standards of technique and presentation.

In this exciting show, Texture’s resident dancers will perform highlights of this past season. Filled with innovative, original, and dynamic choreography Texture takes ballet to a new place.

“We are thrilled to bring professional ballet to Wheeling and host this amazing performance,” said Oglebay Institute director of dance Cheryl Pompeo. “Audiences will be amazed at the graceful and powerful movements of the dancers as well as their gravity-defying leaps and spins.”

Texture founder, artistic director and resident choreographer Alan Obuzor said, “In the studio and on the stage, we try to create a supportive environment where all artists – whether dancers, choreographers, musicians, or designers – can thrive, grow, and learn from each other. It is through this community of shared passion, energy, and encouragement that Texture is able to create and present such cohesive, yet multi-faceted, performances that move audience members and ignite or foster an appreciation of dance.”

Obuzor was honored in 2013 by Dance Magazine by being named one of the “Top 25 to Watch.” Originally from Pittsburgh, he received a contract to join Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre’s professional company at the age of 17. During his seven years in PBT’s Company, he danced a wide array of ballets, which included principal and soloist roles. He also worked with many world-renowned figures in dance, and was selected to originate soloist roles in new works. Obuzor has served on the teaching faculty of PBTS and Pittsburgh Youth Ballet. He has choreographed over 65 new works for Texture, PBT, PBTS, Pittsburgh Youth Ballet Company, New Ballet Ensemble, Harvard Ballet Company, Point Park University, Dancers’ Trust, Canton Ballet, Pittsburgh High School for the Creative and Performing Arts and various independent projects.

“Alan and the rest of the company are an inspiration to watch. As you watch the performance, the music and the stories come to life onstage right before your eyes, and the dancers express emotion with their bodies in ways that words cannot,” Pompeo said.

Oglebay Institute recognizes the importance of creative expression through movement and music. Dance, in all forms, has been a vibrant part of the Institute’s programming for more than eight decades. Classes for all ages and skill levels are offered year round along with a Pre Professional Program for extremely focused dancers. OI’s School of Dance also offers workshops with Master Teachers from around the globe for growth outside of normal class times.
