Cadiz Park preps for annual festival

CADIZ — A community in Harrison County is gearing up for a fall festival this weekend, sure to be fun for the whole family.

Sally Buffalo Park sits off of Ohio 9 just outside of Cadiz. The popular park is open from summer until the end of October, providing visitors with a variety of activities. The park is also home to the annual Sally Buffalo Days celebration, held in the middle of September each year.

This year’s Sally Buffalo Days, set for Saturday and Sunday, will kick off with a pancake breakfast served from 7:30-10:30 a.m Saturday at Wallace Lodge inside the park. The lodge also will hold a business expo and a craft show from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on both days of the event.

Hungry guests will be able to stop in for the fish fry or some cornbread and bean soup. Other highlights of Saturday include a car show, historical presentations at the old school house, the Harrison Hills High School band around the lake, and a parade at 4 p.m. around the main lake in the park. Classic carnival rides and games also will be on site for both days, as provided by Deshler Amusements.

This year will be the third for the popular event, which will have a little something for everyone, with rides, games, food and more throughout the weekend. The fall festival is sponsored by several organizations, including MarkWest and Belmont College, and is organized by the Harrison Regional Chamber of Commerce. There’s a lot of planning that goes into the weekend, but Chamber of Commerce members said it’s worth it to put on a good time.

“There’s a meeting every month all year round where we discuss it,” said Cadiz Village Councilman Thomas Crawshaw, who serves on the board of directors for the Chamber. He said the planning usually starts around the middle of summer for the weekend in September, nailing down vendors, confirming attendance and other activities. Crawshaw said that over the past three years, they’ve done “pretty good” with attendance and enthusiasm for the weekend.

“People always seem to like the vendors and crafters out there,” Crawshaw said, adding that the vendors are one of his favorite things as well.

On Sunday, exercise enthusiasts will have the chance to participate in a 5K run/walk around the area at 1 p.m., sponsored by the Harrison Hills Cross Country team. Prior to that, there will be a children’s 100-yard dash. Music will be provided by Hoard & Jones and Valley Boys on Saturday, and Choir Sing! on Sunday afternoon.

” It’s something in the village a lot of people can come to,” Crawshaw said. “It’s something we all look forward to. It’s definitely a good thing for the area.”
