State Patrol looking into fatal crash

SCIO — Troopers with the Ohio State Highway Patrol are looking into the cause of a fatal crash that occurred outside of Scio on Tuesday evening.

Around 4 p.m. Tuesday, Brian J. Williams, 60, of Dellroy, Ohio, was traveling west on Ohio 151 near Scio on his 2003 Harley-Davidson motorcycle. According to information released by the patrol, Williams traveled over the center line of the road while negotiating a sharp right hand curve, putting him into the path of an oncoming Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck driven by Charles Harris of Scio. Harris was unable to avoid the motorcycle in time, colliding head-on with Williams’ vehicle. The crash caused what state Trooper Eric Derrington described as “disabling damage” to both vehicles.

Harris “pretty much met him (Williams) right in the curve,” Derrington said.

Troopers, as well as the Harrison County sheriff’s deputies and members of the Scio Volunteer Fire Department rushed to the scene, where Williams was pronounced dead. Derrington said Harris suffered minor lacerations and possibly a broken arm and was treated at the scene.

“It’s still pending,” Derrington said, regarding the reason Williams traveled across the center line. “We’re kind of waiting to see if the toxicology gives us any leads.”

Derrington added that Williams was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, although he was not required to by Ohio law. The patrol is still investigating the crash.
