Harrison goes 2 weeks without new coronavirus case

CADIZ — Nearly all of Harrison County’s confirmed COVID-19 cases are now considered recovered, officials said.

It has been more than two weeks since Harrison County has received any new positive cases, and all but one individual has recovered from the virus.

Garen Rhome, administrator of the Harrison County Health Department, met with the Harrison County Board of Commissioners for the county’s weekly COVID-19 update Wednesday morning.

Rhome told Commissioners Paul Cofland, Don Bethel and Dale Norris that as of Wednesday, the county remains at 10 confirmed cases, nine of whom are now considered recovered by the health department.

“For Harrison County, we have good news. For two weeks in a row, there are no new, confirmed or probable known cases of COVID-19. We’ve had a couple more recoveries. We are at nine recovered. Nine out of 10 (confirmed cases) are recovered,” he said.

Rhome said one individual remains hospitalized.

“It’s a long time for this person,” he said.

Rhome confirmed the hospitalized individual is over the age of 70.

“Obviously 10 is not a great sample size, but of our 10 (confirmed cases), it really bares out that it hits the elderly much harder. This individual, just with age and with life in general, made this individual get hit harder,” he said.

Harrison County announced its first COVID-19 case April 13, a man in his 30s. The county’s last positive case, a minor, was announced on May 18.

“Everybody else seemed to get better. We did have one other hospitalization, but that person recovered,” he said.

Rhome said even if the department eventually reports that all 10 cases are recovered, it would not necessarily mean that the individual has been released from the hospital.

“I know it sounds weird, but recovered for us just means they’re (COVID-19 positive individuals) are no longer testing positive for COVID-19 or they no longer are fevered.

“We’ve talked about that before, how people are no longer restricted from movement. So there’s a very good chance I could report recovered for this individual but they could still be in the hospital,” he said.

Rhome asked that people keep the hospitalized individual in their thoughts.

“Keep that individual in your thoughts and hope that this person will get better and go home,” he said.
