SLIDESHOW: Famous Americans

Photos Provided

STUDENTS IN Sheryl Sonk’s sixth grade language arts classes used their lessons to develop complex projects and presentations about some prominent individuals they admire during the Union Local Middle School Famous Americans Fair earlier this month. Held on May 6, the event took over the middle school gym, filling it with displays and costumed students. In addition to their table-top display boards, the students were required to conduct research and to complete an in-depth, typed report on the famous person they chose to highlight. The projects were judged by a large panel of people from the community, including retired teachers, current school district officials and others. The judges used specific criteria to provided by Sonk to rank the projects. For example, each student had to create a time line of their famous American’s life that was a required component of their display board. The students had several weeks to complete the work, including assistance during regular class time. Shown here and on Page B4 are the top finishers in the event, all of whom tied with first-place scores.
