Pet Supplies ‘Plus’ temporarily closes following weekend fire
ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Pet Supplies “Plus” remained temporarily closed Monday as crews worked to clean up the interior of the store following a fire that sparked over the weekend.
The St. Clairsville store posted on its social media page both Sunday and Monday that it would be temporarily closed.
On Monday afternoon, a store employee said crews were cleaning up after an electrical fire broke out in one of the reptile closures on Saturday night. He said they are hoping to reopen on Wednesday; however, it could be a bit longer, depending on how long the cleanup process takes to complete.
The employee, who declined to provide his name, confirmed that staff members were able to safely remove all the animals at the time of the fire.
The Cumberland Trail Fire District got the call at 8:52 p.m. Saturday regarding a fire at the shop at the Ohio valley Plaza. Assistant Fire Chief Dan Grady said the fire was out by the time firefighters arrived on scene, and the customers and employees had been evacuated.
Although the fire had dissipated, Grady said the entire building was filled with smoke and an odor of wires burning was in the air. He said firefighters found heavy smoke and damage to four of the reptilian enclosures.
“We weren’t able to locate any fire. Obviously something had been burning, probably arcing, causing the smoke and the damage to the enclosures, but there was no actual fire when we got there,” he said.
Grady said there was mainly smoke damage and odor issues at the property, which led to the pet store’s temporary closure.
The cause of the fire was electrical, caused by one of the lights in a reptile enclosure.
Grady said there were no injuries and no animals perished as a result of the fire.
He said employees moved the animals from the affected area to separate, safe enclosures.
In addition to Cumberland Trail, the Barton and Neffs volunteer fire departments also assisted with the call.
