Inaugural Wheeling Fashion Week concluded with a bang with a runway show at Waterfront Hall

WHEELING — Friendly City fashion fans came out to a sold-out runway show as a part of the first ever Wheeling Fashion Week Saturday evening, complete with a red carpet.

The show, sponsored by and held at Waterfront Hall, was the last in a series of events to celebrate Wheeling’s blooming fashion scene.

Local design firms and designers Payton’s Pretties, North Fork Jewelry Design, Two Times: Clothing and Collectibles, ALPHASTORE, House of Rouse, Rinnifus Rae Designs, Bebot, Vindeezy and Mia D’Amico broadcast their looks in the show, which also featured local models.

The runway show drew in fashionistas of all ages, from young children with their parents to older generations that have seen many a fashion trend come and go.

This is the whole idea of fashion week, said local lawyer and host of Tuesday night’s fashion panel event Suzanne Quinn. She and others expressed their excitement at this kind of event starting in Wheeling, an unexpected home for a high fashion event.

Some attendees expressed that they were not aware there was a fashion scene in Wheeling at all.

“I think fashion week is a great thing in Wheeling,” Quinn said. “I just think it is a community affair and it brings us back to learning how to talk to each other like civilized people. And it is culture, fashion is culture. If we can get young people interested in it, just think.”

Quinn showed up to the runway wearing a gold, glittery dress she has had for much of her life and worn on and off since the 70s. She carried with her a picture of her wearing the dress next to Ted Kennedy at a law school event. She also got married in the dress in 1981, she said.

Her shimmery gold number was just another example of how the community can come together over fashion.

“I’ve worn it for a long time and it has all sorts of stains on it so I’m hoping some of the vintage clothes people can advise me on what to do about it,” she remarked.

She also donned a feather boa she was gifted by two young women from London back in 1968 in Madrid, Spain.

Others wore everything from blazers and sky high heels to flower crowns and flowing skirts.

Afterwards, attendees and those who were not able to snag a ticket celebrated the successful inaugural Wheeling Fashion Week with an after party sponsored by the Friendlier City Project and local nonprofit Why Don’t You Stay Awhile, also hosted at Waterfront Hall.
