Murder-for-hire trial rescheduled

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Steven Andrew Moore, the man accused of murder-for-hire in the 2013 fatal shooting death of former Powhatan Point mayor Marvin Brown, finally has a trial date for all of his charges.

Belmont County Common Pleas Judge John Vavra heard updates Tuesday from Belmont County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Kevin Flanagan and from Moore’s attorney, Chase Mallory. The judge then set Moore’s trial date for July 30.

Moore, 38, of 5495 Cove Road, Powhatan Point, is accused of aggravated murder and aggravated burglary with a firearm specification on Nov. 18, 2013.

The charges are first-degree felonies.

He also faces charges of trafficking in drugs. According to the prosecutor’s office, he had been in jail on those counts when he allegedly implicated himself in Brown’s death. Mallory asked that the scheduled July 12 trial date for the drug charges be placed on the same schedule as the murder charge.

Mallory speculated that the drug charges might be resolved prior to July 30, leaving Moore to face only the murder and burglary charges on that date.

Meanwhile, Flanagan said the process of evidence-sharing is proceeding.

“What (Mallory) has so far essentially is what the state plans to use pursuant to his case,” Flanagan said.

Mallory said he has no concerns about the state of the process.

Moore remains in jail in lieu of a $1 million bond. He faces a maximum sentence of life without parole.
