ZANESVILLE, Ohio — Vice President Mike Pence made a campaign stop Wednesday evening, holding a “Workers for Trump” event at the Muskingum County Fairgrounds.

Pence’s speech — in front of a crowd that filled the overflow area even after he started speaking — covered a wide range of topics, touting the accomplishments of the Trump administration, jobs in Ohio, the response to coronavirus and taking shots at Democrat nominee Joe Biden.

The vice president’s remarks lasted approximately 45 minutes then followed it up with a live interview with Fox News’ Martha McCallum using the enthusiastic crowd as the backdrop.

A group of Biden supporters were also gathered outside the fairgrounds.

With workers in hardhats and various uniforms seated beside the stage, Pence touted Ohio’s jobs under the Trump administration.

“Under this president’s leadership, we revived our economy in those first three years,” Pence said. “We cut taxes across the board for working families, small businesses and family farms. We rolled back more federal red tape than any administration in American history. We unleashed American energy and fought for free and fair trade. In a word, we fought to keep every promise we made to the people of Ohio.”

Pence talked about the Lordstown automotive plant and the administration’s work to bring jobs back after General Motors shuttered it.

“The facility closed in March of 2019,” he said. “There was a heartbreak. That entire community and the state of Ohio. President Donald Trump wasn’t having any of it.

“He picked up the phone, called the president of General Motors, and he told GM, find a way to bring jobs back to Lordstown — and they did.

“The president called it great news for Ohio, and it was.”

Pence said the plant was sold to a company that will use it to produce pickup trucks and GM plans to build a battery facility that will employ 1,100 Ohioans.

“That’s called promises made and promises kept,” Pence said. “I mean, the truth is this president will fight for jobs not just here in Ohio, but all across the country.

“The forgotten men and women of America were forgotten no more.”

Pence even touted the Trump’s involvement in the negotiations for Big Ten football to restart, which drew loud “O-H-I-O” chants from the crowd.

Trade and the energy industry were also talking points aimed at the crowd of Ohio workers.

“Thanks to President Trump, NAFTA is yesterday and the USMCA is here to stay,” Pence said, adding the country lost 200,000 manufacturing jobs under the Obama-Biden administration and claimed the U.S. added 500,000 manufacturing jobs in three years under Trump.

“We opened up coal country and the war on coal is over,” Pence said, shifting focus to energy. “Joe Biden and the radical left want to crush American energy and crush American energy jobs.

“Last March ended debate Joe Biden said quote, ‘no new fracking.’ You know here in Ohio some estimates show that ending fracking would literally cost 700,000 jobs.”

A less popular moment of the speech was when Pence praised Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, which drew a mix of boos and cheers.

The Vice President joked that Trump was jealous to hear he was going to Ohio.

The focus shifted to the administration’s response to coronavirus and the economic fallout from it.

“Before the first documented case of community transmission in the United States, President Trump did what no other president has ever done — he suspended all travel from China,” Pence said. “Joe Biden criticized the move, he called it Xenophobic. I can tell you as the head of the White House Coronavirus Task Force that move saved untold American lives.

“Our hearts go out to all the families that have lost loved ones and over the course of this pandemic, including more than 4,000 families here in Ohio.”

Pence covered the civil unrest around the nation and talked at length about the two Los Angles Country Sheriff’s deputies that were shot this past weekend.

“That is the men and women who serve in law enforcement and are some of the best people in this country,” he said. “The disrespect and these attacks on those in law enforcement must stop and they must stop now.”

He turned the topic back on Biden.

“All Joe Biden has talked about all summer is peaceful protesters as the American people watched businesses and our major cities literally burn,” he said. “Two weeks ago he did step out and condemn violence in all the forms it takes, but right after that criticized law enforcement.

“Joe Biden never called out his campaign staff or his running mate for raising money to bail out violent criminals.”

Pence added the Trump administration is “not going to defund the police, not now, not ever.”

Pence attempted to make the connection between Biden and the left wing of the Democrat Party.

“Joe Biden will be nothing more than a Trojan horse for the radical left,” Pence said. “The choice in this election has never been clearer.

“Here in Ohio and across America we will decide not so much if American will be more conservative or more liberal, more Republican or more Democrat, more red or more blue — the choice in this election is whether American remains America.”
