Linsly unloads on Shadyside, 21-10

SHADYSIDE – It took Linsly a few innings to get untracked offensively but the Lady Cadets closed with a massive rush in rolling past Shadyside, 21-10, Thursday afternoon.

Linsly was held scoreless over the first three innings. The tide turned in the fourth frame when the Lady Cadets tallied four runs. They added four more runs in the fifth, seven in the sixth and closed with six in the seventh frame.

“We are like that at times,” Linsly coach Herb Minch said. “We can be cold and slow starting then we can really turn it on. Tonight, we did just that.

“The girls are getting better. They are making progress,” added the West Liberty University Hall of Fame coach. “We are not where we want to be but we are getting better. The girls are working hard.”

The lopsided win improved Linsly to 13-6 on the campaign. The Lady Cadets are idle until Tuesday when they welcome Caldwell.

Linsly defeated Shadyside, 11-7, in their first matchup.

Shadyside owned a 4-0 after three innings with the big hit being a two-run single by Emma Gorrell.

Linsly’s four-run fourth was fueled by a three-run homer by Madison Applegarth.

Shadyside responded immediately with three runs in the home half of the fourth. Freshman dandy Cam Kolvek doubled and came home on a home run by sophomore Kamryn Parker. Kaylie Warnock followed with a single and was plated by an Ali Weatherson single, giving the hosts a 7-4 lead.

It was all Linsly for the balance of the contest.

The visitors broke the game wide open by adding seven more markers in the sixth on singles from Driscoll, Applegarth, VanSyoc, Macy Sustik, Aubrei Joanou to go with two walks and two Lady Tiger errors.

“It was a game for four innings then the roof collapsed,” Shadyside head coach Bob Gorrell said. “I have never been involved in a game like this. We made way too many errors.

“You have to have a short memory and forget about this game,” he added. “We go to Frontier Saturday for a doubleheader and hopefully we can right the ship.”

Shadyside is now 7-7. The Lady Tigers were playing shorthanded as first baseman Bri Harris and catcher Layla Samsa are out nursing injuries.

Parker started in the circle for Shadyside. She gave way to Weatherson in the sixth inning.

Linsly banged out 15 hits and took advantage of 10 Shadyside miscues.

“I thought Layla pitched a nice game. She threw a lot of pitches but this was her first complete game.

“We were also solid defensively,” Minch added. “It was a nice win. Hopefully, it is one we can build on.”

The Lady Cadets did get web gems from catcher Sustic and shortstop Driscoll, who also ended with three singles. Sustic had two hits on the day.

Kolvek turned in a sparkling defensive play for Shadyside at third base, snagging a rocket line drive and turning it into a double play.
