Barnesville Area Education Foundation announces Hall of Fame inductees

BARNESVILLE — The Barnesville Area Education Foundation will induct Dr. John P. Roe and Edward K. Cheffy into its Hall of Fame on July 8.

The induction ceremony will be held during the Alumni Banquet on July 8 in the cafeteria area on the Barnesville High School campus.

Dr. John P. Roe, Class of 1968

As a student at Barnesville High School, Roe was on student council for four years, a class officer for three years and a member of Key Club for four years. Roe was inducted into the National Honor Society as a junior. He also served as a student manager of the basketball team for four years. Roe was appointed to the U.S. Air Force Academy in 1968 and graduated in 1972 as a distinguished graduate, having been on the dean’s list and the commandant’s list for all eight semesters.

At graduation, he was the recipient of the Surgeon General’s Award for the Outstanding Cadet in the Life Sciences. He then attended the Medical College of Ohio at Toledo graduating in 1975. Roe received the Clinical Neurosciences Award at graduation.

He worked at David Grant USAF Medical Center at Travis Air Force Base in California as a staff general surgeon and chief of colorectal surgery and was awarded the Air Force Commendation Medal in 1984 for his contributions to the general surgery residency program and as a consultant for Air Force bases in the western United States.

In 1993 he was given the Outstanding Teacher Award by the surgery residents at the University of California at Davis. In 1999 he was presented The Dan B. Moore MD Quality Award for outstanding contributions to the Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in South Sacramento.

Roe is a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow in the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons serving as vice president from 2006-07. He served two terms on the American Board of Colon and Rectal Surgeons from 1998-2006 and has been a longtime examiner for the board.

Roe and his wife, Paulette, are both retired and continue to reside in Northern California.

They enjoy hiking the trails of the American River Parkway in Sacramento or the Sierra Nevada near Truckee to fulfill their motto: “keep moving.”

Edward K. Cheffy, Class of 1971

At BHS, Ed Cheffy was inducted into the National Honor Society and was the salutatorian of his class. He served as president of the student council, president of the Key Club and a class officer. He lettered in two sports.

Upon graduation from high school, Cheffy attended Harvard University and graduated cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in history and literature. After that, he enrolled at The Ohio State University College of Law and obtained a juris doctor with honors in 1978.

He returned to Belmont County to practice law with the firm of Kinder, Kinder and Hanlon in 1978, and he subsequently joined Frost & Jacobs in Naples, Florida, in 1984. In 1993, he and John Passidomo founded the law firm of Cheffy Passidomo, P.A., which is currently celebrating its 30th anniversary with 14 lawyers and 35 employees.

Ed is board certified as both a civil trial lawyer and as a business litigation lawyer, and he is a Fellow in The American College of Trial Lawyers. For the last 25 years he has lectured for the Florida Bar on “Ethics for Civil Trial Lawyers.”

Cheffy’s community service has included serving as chair of the Board of Hospice of Naples and serving on the board of The Community School of Naples. From 2000-02, he coached his daughter’s mock trial team at the Community School of Naples, which won three county championships, three regional championships and two state championships. In 2003, he was selected as a laureate in the Jr. Achievement of Southwest Florida Business Leadership Hall of Fame.

Ed and his wife, Keri, have four adult children and two grandchildren. He said he is forever grateful for the values, life lessons and work ethic he learned growing up in Barnesville.

The BAEF provides funds for local education systems and students that might not otherwise be available through public funding. Each year the foundation evaluates and votes on worthy nominations for the BAEF Hall of Fame.
