Voters head to polls today

MARTINS FERRY — Today is Election Day in Ohio, and voters will weigh in on their choices for elected offices and issues at the local, state and federal levels, including the primary for president of the United States.

Polls are open from 6:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

In Belmont County, two seats are up for grabs on the board of commissioners. Challenger Vince Gianangeli of Colerain is contending with incumbent Josh Meyer of Bellaire for the Republican nomination to one seat, while incumbent J.P. Dutton of St. Clairsville faces challenger Shaun Patrick Moran of St. Clairsville for the GOP nomination for the second seat.

Voters in some parts of the county will be asked to approve tax issues as well. These include:

∫ An additional property tax levy for the village of Bridgeport for current operating expenses. The county auditor estimates the 2-mill levy will generate $51,000 annually for five years. The tax would first be due in 2025 and is expected to cost the owner of a property valued at $100,000 about $70 per year.

∫ A replacement tax levy for Barton Crescent Fire District No. 5 to maintain and purchase equipment for any emergency medical service operated by the fire department or firefighting company. The county auditor estimates the 5-mill continuing levy will collect $206,000 annually, which amounts to $175 for each $100,000 of a property’s appraised value. It would be collected for the first time in 2025.

∫ A replacement and increased property tax for Pease-Colerain Fire District No. 1 that would replace the existing 3-mill levy with a 7-mill measure for providing and maintaining fire or ambulance apparatus, buildings or sites, sources of water supply and materials, establishment and maintenance of lines of fire alarm telegraph, or the payment of permanent, part-time or volunteer firemen of firefighting companies. The county auditor estimates it will collect $298,000 annually and would cost $245 for each $100,000 appraised property value. The continuing measure would be first due in 2025.

In Harrison County, voters are being asked to approve a 1-mill, five-year levy for police protection, including salaries and equipment for the sheriff’s office.

A second levy, 1.5 mills for five years, is on the ballot for maintenance and operation of the Harrison County home.

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown is on the ballot with no primary challenger, but three men are vying for the Republican nomination to his seat. They are state Sen. Matt Dolan, Secretary of State Frank LaRose and Cleveland businessman Bernie Moreno.

Five men are seeking to capture the congressional seat recently vacated by Republican Bill Johnson, who stepped down to become president of Youngstown State University. They will appear on the ballot twice — once to assume the seat and serve out the remainder of Johnson’s term, and once for the nomination to run for the seat in November’s general election.

The field of candidates for Ohio’s 6th Congressional District includes Democrats Rylan Z. Finzer and Michael L. Kripchak along with Republicans Michael A. Rulli, Reggie Stoltzfus and Rick Tsai.

Local residents also get to vote on the next state senator to represent the area in Columbus. On the ballot are Republican Brian M. Chavez, who was nominated to the position when Frank Hoagland retired in December, and Democrat Iva Faber.

There is a race to be the state representative for Ohio’s 95th House District. Only Lish Greiner filed on the Democrat side, but incumbent Don Jones, R-Freeport, faces a primary challenge from Nelson E. Roe.
