Update: St. Clairsville-Richland Schools Also On Soft Lockdown

St. Clairsville-Richland Schools, though they received no threats, were placed on a soft lockdown today.
Superintendent Dr. Walt Skaggs said that, while the school did not receive any threats, the schools went on soft lockdown as a precautionary measure.
“Based on all of the information we’ve heard from area schools I did it to be proactive,” Skaggs said.
The soft lockdown is where the schools operator business as usual inside of the buildings but all of the exterior doors are locked. The decision comes off the back of several area schools receiving anonymous active shooter threats via social media.

MARTINS FERRY — Martins Ferry City Schools are on soft lockdown after receiving an online threat earlier Tuesday morning.
Martins Ferry Schools Superintendent Jim Fogle said a “soft lockdown” means that students and staff from the school will be the only ones allowed into the school, and no one can leave. If a parent needs to pick up their student, they can call the office, and the school will bring the student out.
The Martins Ferry Police Department has not found evidence that is credible of the threat. The department is still investigating and will let Fogle know of any updates.
After school extracurricular activities will not be canceled because of the lack of credible evidence of this threat, Fogle said.
“We did it out of an abundance of caution,” he said.
Martins Ferry Schools do have an increased presence of police officers on site today, thanks to the Martins Ferry Police Department and Police Chief Jerry Murphy, he said.
The soft lockdown will end at the end of the school day. The schools will resume to a regular schedule starting tomorrow.
