Guntry to open at Highlands in January

WHEELING — The first shots at the Guntry indoor shooting facility under construction at The Highlands should ring out in late January.

Guntry President Rick Landsman said plans are to open Guntry to the public before Jan. 30.

“We’ll probably do a couple things before that,” he said. “We’ll be setting up to sell gift cards and memberships at the (nearby) Hampton (Inn) probably In the next week.”

The Guntry outdoor structure appears complete, and signage has been placed. But Guntry has not yet received its use and occupancy permit, so the public cannot yet come inside, Landsman explained.

“There is some interior work that has to be done, and we still have to build shelves. But the building is just about done,” he said.

Landsman previously planned on Guntry being open by fall, but he said he wasn’t discouraged by the delay.

“You’re always behind on construction, and you always plan for that,” he said.

Landsman noted the winter months will likely draw people to the facility.

“People don’t always like to shoot outside when it’s cold, so they come inside,” he said. “We’re looking forward to it.”

Guntry will offer both 25-yard and 100-yard shooting lanes in a climate-controlled environment with proper ventilation systems. The property also features a 340-degree interactive simulator and an 80-person training room to assist with law enforcement training.

Landsman retired from law enforcement after 35 years of service with Baltimore County, Maryland. He and other retired officers then started Guntry, as there was a need for such facilities where law enforcement could hone weaponry skills.

Law enforcement agencies will be able to rent space in the facility to train officers.

Guntry also will feature an archery range.
