Smoother sailing may soon be on horizon for Shadyside council

T-L Photo/Gage Vota Current Shadyside council member and newly elected Mayor Mike Meintel agrees with former council member Nick Ferrelli that village officials need to do what’s best for the village, as council members Brandon Parr, and Lisa Duvall sit to his right.

SHADYSIDE – The feud between former council member Nick Ferrelli and village officials seem to have reached a ceasefire.

During Monday’s regularly scheduled village council meeting Ferrelli who was slated to speak about the vacant village administrator position decided to use his time to congratulate current council members who were re-elected as well as current council member Mike Meintel who was the victor in the Mayoral race against Ferrelli during last Tuesday’s election.

Ferrelli added that he understands the longstanding animosity between him and select village officials but wishes to be able to put the hard feelings in the past.

“This administration was plagued from the day it started with the hard feelings and animosity. We’ve all gotten so much bad press, the village has gotten so much bad press and have really made a mockery out of this town the last couple of years,” he said. “I just hope that when this new administration takes over, we can all just move past this.”

Ferrelli added that despite not being elected mayor he has plans of being active within the community.

“I’m not going anywhere and I want to be able to be an asset to the village and definitely not a liability or hindrance or whatever you want to call it,” Ferrelli said. “I just hope that we can all move past all of this craziness.”

Meintel thanked Ferrelli and said that he would also like if everyone involved can move past the animosity and get back on track with doing what’s best for the village.

Current Mayor Robert Newhart then said that he wanted to congratulate everyone who won Tuesday’s election, but applauded the village’s residents for coming out to vote in such large numbers.

“I would like to thank the voters for voting. We had a tremendous race. In all of my years, I’ve never seen double digits of people running for council and the people have spoken,” Newhart said. “It was very enjoyable to see that much interest in this community.”

He added that he would also like to thank the residents for passing two of the three levies that were on last Tuesday’s ballot.

A 1.9-mill renewal levy was passed with 544 votes in favor, and 404 votes against. The levy amounts to $9 for each $100,000 of the county auditor’s assessed value of a property for five years while 404 votes were tallied against the levy. The second levy that passed was a 2.5 mills renewal levy or $12 for each $100,000 of the county auditor’s assessed value for five years. There were 526 votes in favor while 415 were cast against it.

Newhart said that the 1.35 mills renewal levy that didn’t pass wouldn’t have added any additional money.

The 1.35 mills or $47 for each $100,000 of the county auditor’s assessed value for five years. It failed to pass with only 317 votes in favor while 614 votes were cast against it.

“That was a renewal for money that fell off two years ago. It was nothing new. We weren’t trying to get more money, we were trying to stay the same. And unfortunately, we’re going to have to try and run it again in the Spring,” Newhart said.

He then in jest told Meintel that it’s not his responsibility to get the renewal levy passed now.

“One hundred thousand dollars is a lot of money for the village. We’re a small village, we have to live within our means,” Newhart said.

Council member Melanie Haswell then mentioned that last winter, council went from meeting twice a month to once a month to accommodate council member Brandon Parr because he coaches varsity girls basketball at Shadyside High School. She asked if council wanted to move back to once a month during the winter.

Parr said that his team has a game every Monday throughout its season which would make it difficult for him to attend two meetings a month.

Council then all voted in favor of only having one council meeting a month throughout the winter.

The next council meeting will be Dec. 17 at 6 p.m.
