Libraries Are Vital

Dear?Editor,

Saying that libraries are a thing of the past is like saying that life-long learning is no longer important or that stories are no longer enjoyed. As the source of information, entertainment and enrichment, the Library is more vital and alive than ever before.

Along with paperback, hardbound, and large print books (which are as popular as ever) as well as audio books, CDs, DVDs, and microfiche readers, the Library’s Digital Catalog now offers E-books, (including audio), e- magazines, streaming videos and music, all of which can be downloaded (for free) onto just about any digital device. Whether you are sitting at home, in the Library or on vacation somewhere in the world you can connect to your library’s catalog and download/checkout your item choices.

Library websites provide information to assist patrons with genealogy research, in viewing digital historic photographs and documents, in selecting career options, the right colleges and degrees. These sites also offer top quality on-line reference materials, and databases, as well as tax information, core curriculum for students, educational games and so much more. Libraries have their own Facebook, Twitter and other social media accounts that are directly linked to their websites.

Computers, copiers, printers and fax machines are available in libraries. Wireless connection and printing are also possible in most libraries. Superior programs for families, adults, teens and children as well as outreach to schools, camps, and senior citizen centers are also offered.

Libraries services are as diverse as the patrons they serve. There is something for everyone. Check out your public library today and enjoy coming home again. You are always welcome.
