Tolbert family makes a positive impact

Dear Editor,

I, as well as a great many others, am saddened to learn of the soon-to-be-closing of another long-time, successful business in the city of Martins Ferry. Fashion Manor, a women’s clothing boutique, has served the area since 1948, nearly seven decades.

Fashion Manor was established, owned and operated by William and Angela Tolbert and the Tolbert family, being successfully run by two of the Tolberts’ daughters, Vicky and Pam, since the passing of their mother in 1994.

The closing of Fashion Manor comes shortly following the closing of another long-time, iconic Martins Ferry business, Shutler’s Market, which ceased operation at the close of business on Dec. 31 following 66 years of service.

Both establishments were well-known and highly respected for their thriving business, professionalism and very consumer-oriented, friendly and welcoming atmosphere, which contributed greatly to the positive experience of area shoppers over the decades.

The Tolbert family have long been very prominent members of the Martins Ferry business community, and Deluxe Toy and Hobby (Novelty), which was also founded by William and Angela Tolbert, continues to thrive in Martins Ferry, going strong for 60 years and counting, now under the leadership of another of William and Angela’s daughters, Connie, along with her husband, Mike Yeso.

In addition, a number of businesses and professional offices are currently owned and operated by members of the Tolbert family serving Martins Ferry and its surrounding areas.

The Tolbert family has left, and continues to leave, a profound, positive impact on the city of Martins Ferry and its residents, and for such, as essentially a life-long resident, I am most appreciative.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Richard Hord
