You can have anything you want, if …

One of my mentors in sales was the late Zig Ziglar. I attended conferences where he spoke. I read his books and listened to tapes of his presentations (this was before CDs). I had never met Zig in person until my first National Speakers Association Convention in Phoenix. At coffee break I found myself standing next to my hero Zig Ziglar. To me Zig was like a TV, movie or rock star. I said, “Hi Zig.” He gave me a friendly, “Good morning.” We talked like I would to any of the other NSA member. He was a regular guy. I learned a lot about sales from Zig. He said, sales ...

Truck stops aren’t what they used to be

There’s a new shopping option for residents of Belmont County. A new Love’s Travel Stops and Country Store opened just off Interstate 70 at exit 208 — Belmont/Morristown — a few days ago. I never imagined how popular a place I thought of as a gas station and truck stop would be. Love’s played it smart, setting fuel prices during its opening days considerably lower than those of surrounding stores. That got people to its pumps, then they went walking through the doors to the store. My husband, Mike, and I were among the local residents who decided to stop and explore the ...

The Bible and progressivism

Dear Editor, It is surprising sometimes how in the simplest verses of scripture you find people who act either for society’s good or for its destruction. I believe it is that way with those who espouse leftism versus those who claim the conservative viewpoint. I would dare say it even goes to a deeper aspect of the soul. In John 10:10 we find the following verse, “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy.” If we are honest with one another we find that leftist ideologies tend to demonstrate these qualities as compared to conservative views in current society. But ...

Route 214, aka Rose Hill Pike/High Ridge

Dear Editor, Route 214 from I-470 serves as a gateway to neighborhoods on Moss Run Rd, Jorden Run Rd, Breezy Point, Patterson Hill, Overlook Ct, Rock Mt Rd, Hillview Ave, Central Ave, and Crescent St. I apologize if I have missed anyone. It is also flanked by two cemeteries holding souls of countless loved ones. Addresses change (i.e. High Ridge Rd., Rose Hill Pike) but all become part and parcel of “The All American Town.” Citizens, the lower portion of 214 is an unsafe, deteriorating embarrassment to the village. Consider my imaginary scenario. A group of young ...

Enjoy end of fish fry season

The Lenten season, a time of fasting, reflection and preparation for Easter among Christians, is drawing to a close this week. The coming Maundy Thursday marks the end of Lent, with Good Friday and Easter falling on the following Friday and Sunday. While traditions have evolved so that observant Christians may abstain from any number of indulgences during this period, the time-honored tradition of not eating meat on Fridays during Lent has led to another long-standing custom — the Friday fish fry. Numerous local churches offer fish frys to feed hungry people who do not eat meat on ...

Save our libraries

Dear Editor, Public libraries are an essential part of our society and must be protected at all costs. Public libraries are not only a place to gain knowledge but are affordable entertainment and a safe place for parents to bring their children available to all citizens regardless of financial status. Public libraries are an American invention and as such is a service that should be celebrated and expanded not cut. Robert McFarland Steubenville
