Davis has huge game in Amarillo’s 89-86 win

There was another shootout in southern Texas Saturday night, but it had nothing to do with gunfire – just footballs and points – and only the defenses’ pride were injured.

The Amarillo Venom and Duke City Gladiators combined for 175 points – including 77 in the first quarter and 49 more in the overtime sessions – on Coors Light Field inside the Amarillo Civic Center, with the Venom posting a thrilling, 89-86, Champions Indoor Football League win in four OTs.

With the score deadlocked at 63 at the end of regulation, Amarillo outscored Duke City 26-23 in the extra session for the hard-earned victory as Wyreaz Bradley scampered in from 14 yards out to clinch the win.

Former Bellaire High and Ball State University quarterback Nate Davis tossed two TD passes in the OT, while also running for a six-pointer. He finished the game with seven touchdown passes and 344 yards on 25 of 38. He also ran 11 times for 40 yards and a pair of TDs. He was picked off one time and also returned an interception 20 yards on defense.

Davis fired three touchdown passes in the first quarter, but the Venom trailed 41-36. He tossed his fourth TD pass in the second quarter, while running in from 10 yards out in the third panel. He added his fifth TD completion in the fourth quarter.

As good as Davis’s numbers were, he was overshadowed by Duke City’s Casey Peters who threw for 390 yards and eight TDs on 31-45. Peters also had a rushing touchdown.

With the win, Amarillo (6-3) kept pace with front-running Wichita Force (7-3) and the Sioux City Bandits (6-3). The Texas Revolution (6-4) and Dodge City Law (6-4) are tied for fourth.

The Venom are back in action Saturday night when they host the Revolution. The travel to Sioux City on May 30.

Baldwin Wallace Ousted

The second-seeded Yellow Jackets were eliminated from the NCAA Division III East Regional Baseball Tournament in just two games last week.

B-W, which features former Bellaire Big Red standouts Spencer Badia and Nick Patrone, dropped a 7-5 nod to Old Westbury in its first game before falling to Keystone (Pa.), 4-2, to end the season with a school-record 31 wins in 43 decisions.

It marked the second straight season in which Baldwin Wallace has advanced to the NCAA Tournament. They made it to the World Series last season.

My Deflategate Thoughts

I’m a Miami Dolphins fan. Enough said!

Nailer Now in Nashville

The Wheeling Nailers are excited to announce that a member of the front office has graduated from the organization, climbing the ladder to the National Hockey League. Matt Rosen is joining the Nashville Predators as a New Fan Development Representative.

The 27-year-old Rosen came to the Nailers in the summer of 2010 when he began his tenure with the club as an intern. That fall, he was promoted to a full-time position, which ultimately led him to become the team’s season ticket manager, in addition to the director of game operations, as he spent five full seasons in Wheeling. Prior to making the move to the Ohio Valley, Matt, a graduate of Northwood University, got his start in sports with the Ontario Hockey League’s Saginaw Spirit.

Rosen will join a fellow Wheeling alum in Nashville, as Predators head coach Peter Laviolette held that role with the Nailers during the 1997-98 season.
