Fifth annual Rosepapa Scramble set for Aug. 1

The fifth annual Amanda Rosepapa Memorial Foundation golf scramble is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 1.

The event will be a four-person scramble at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course in Armstrong Mills and the entry fee is $200 per team. The cost includes golf, cart, lunch and beverages. There will be prizes for longest drive, longest putt and closest to the pin.

The proceeds of the event will benefit the OVAC softball scholarship and go toward starting a “second chance fund” for nursing students at Belmont College.

WEST VIRGINIA AMATEUR

This summer, the 96th annual West Virginia Amateur will be held and qualifying is underway for the event.

The first of six qualifying events was held this week at Wheeling Country Club.

Qualifying from the event were medalist Logan Lojszczyk of Follansbee, who carded a 69; Jacob Nickell of Wheeling, who fired a 71 and former River High quarterback Rico Simonetti, who also posted a 71.

Kyle Wensel and Jay Davis finished fourth and fifth, respectively, and will serve as the alternates.

BELMONT HILLS

JUNIOR CLINICS

A chance for area youth to improve their golf games will begin on June 2 and run throghout the month at Belmont Hills Country Club during it’s annual junior golf clinics.

The dates are as follows: June 2, 5, 9, 10, 16, 17, 22, 24 and 29. The cost is $125 for members and $150 for non members. Class times will be assigned on Sunday, May 31.

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

The Wheeling Automotive Group event was held on Thursday, May 6.

Jim Ennis fired a round of 34 to prevail. Bob Green also posted a 34 to finish second. Chris Bommer was third with a 37. Gary Mercer was awarded fourth also with a 37.

There was a four-way tie for fifth at 38 between Rich Colley, Dave Slonaker, Terry Younkins and Doug Miller.

In the handicap scoring, Bruce Grover prevailed with a 32. Dick Moore was second with a 33. Joe Kosar was third with a 33. Tony Lira was fourth with a 34. Ted Koski and Bruce Beck tied for fifth with a 35.

The Doris L. Kinney Memorial event was held last Sunday.

The team of Orie Robinson and David Coram checked with a 63 to win the medal scoring. Art Lightner and Roger Kupfer were second with a 64. Jim Ennis and Bob Green had a 65 to finish third, while Bob McLaughlin and Nick Klamut were fourth with a 65. Gary Mercer and Chris Bommer finished fifth with a 65.

In the handicap scoring, Bruno DeCrease and John Wakim finished with a 56 to prevail. Tom Mitchell and Don Dewitt were second with a 57. Dave Stauver and Dick Moore finished third with a 58. Mike Crow and Bruce Beck finished fourth with a 59, which was the same score posted by Jerry Daugherty and Joe Fatagati.

JUNIOR GOLF TOUR

You know summer is coming when junior golf tour events get underway. The first First National Bank Junior Golf Tour event was held at Edgewater Golf Club in Minerva last Saturday.

Area players who took part in the 16-18 year old division were Will Davis (Buckeye Trail), who shot an 86. Joel Shane (Martins Ferry), who shot a 90.

In the 13-15 year old divison, Luke Kroll (Martins Ferry) fired a 96, while Clint Heavilin (Harrison Central) finished with a 99.

In the boys’ 12 and under event, Will Foster (St. Clairsville) fired a 54 in the 9-hole event.

WHEELING COUNTRY CLUB

Qualifying for the club’s annual Member-Member tournament got underway last weekend.

Fourteen of the 22 registered teams played their qualifier and the remaining duos will play this weekend with the low 15 teams advancing to the match-play event. The 16th team in the field is Scott Seabright and Jared Jorden, who qualify automatically as the defending champions.

The low score was posted by Phil High and Joe Marchlenski with a 61. Five teams posted rounds of 64.

Those included: Rico Simonetti and Justin Ferrell; Bobby Hartong and Jim Brinsky; Mike Romaine and Glenn Didriksen; Jeff Shultz and Tim Roberts; Thad Obecny II and Thadd Obecny.

  • The Bellaire Touchdown Club will be sponsoring its ninth annual golf outing on Saturday, June 27 at Fairway River Links. The entry fee is $60 per person or $240.00 per team of four.   • THE FLUSHING Masonic Lodge scholarship scramble is an open tournament for the first 22 teams to register. The event will be held on Saturday, May 16 at Cadiz Country Club. The event will begin at 12:30 p.m. with a shotgun start. Lunch and registration will be served at 11:30 a.m. The entry fee is $65, which includes skins games, steak dinner, awards, door prizes, beverages, golf and cart. All proceeds of the event will benefit two $500 scholarships at both Union Local and Harrison Central High School.   • THE 16TH annual Sons of Italy Bellaire Lodge #754 is holding its annual scramble to benefit Alzheimers & Cooley’s Anemia Charities on Monday, June 8 at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The entry feet for the event is $200 per team, which includes golf, cart, refreshments and dinner after the round.   • THE 4TH annual Thomas R. Dowler Memorial Golf Scramble will be held at Belmont Hills Country Club on May 18. The event will begin with a shotgun start at noon and lunch and registration will begin at 11 a.m. The proceeds of the event will go to the Dowler fund, which supports students, faculty, programs and facilities of Belmont College.   • THE SARDIS Volunteer Fire Department will host its fourth annual golf scramble on Saturday, May 9 at Fairway Riverside Golf Course in Sardis. The four-play, better-ball scramble will begin with an 8 a.m. shotgun start. Cash prizes for the top three teams will be awarded. Door prizes, raffles are included in the $200 per team entry fee. There are sponsorship opportunities available, too. There are $50 hole sponsors or $500 for a major sponsor, which includes a team.
