OFF THE TEE: OUE golfers celebrating first ORCC championship

They’re making room in the Ohio University Health and Physical Education Center for yet another Ohio Regional Campus Conference Tournament banner.

For the first time in the school’s strong athletic history, the Panthers are Ohio Regional Campus Conference Tournament champions in the sport of men’s golf.

The Panthers wrapped up the title by posting the best round of their season, shooting a score of 302 at the Zanesville Invitational to win by 22 shots over OU-Chilicothe.

Following that round, they posted a 311 at Cadiz Country Club last weekend to win by 15 shots in the Eastern Invitational, which wrapped up the ORCC crown.

“Coming into the season, I thought we had the ability to be a really strong team, but it’s always a matter of whether or not the scores would follow,” OUE head coach Steve Luckhardt said. “I didn’t expect us to have as good of a season as we did. We’re still a very young team, but these guys are really into it and committed to it.”

The Panthers were led at the Eastern Invitational by Buckeye Trail grad Justin Wilson, who shot a 75 to win the medalist crown. Steubenville Central product Thad Schrickel, who is the lone senior on the squad, posted a 77.

Union Local grad Trevor Mudrak was third on the team with a 78 and Buckeye Trail’s Austin Warehime fired an 81 to round out the Panthers’ scoring.

After the opening nine holes, Luckhardt thought his players settled down after they had a pretty good idea that they’d put the title in ice.

“We had a 45-shoot cushion or so at the start of the round and after we saw the scores on the opening nine, we kind of figured we’d be OK,” Luckhardt pointed out. “So, it wasn’t too nerve-wracking.

Helping to guide OUE to its first golf title is especially sweet for Luckhardt since he’s a graduate of the school.

Though the conference title is wrapped up, OUE’s season isn’t finished. It will compete in the Ohio Regional Campus State Tournament, hosted by Miami Middletown and Miami Hamilton.
