OFFF THE TEE: OVGA begins this weekend at Wheeling Park

The local golf season kicks into full swing this weekend.

The first Ohio Valley Golf Association event of the season tees off Saturday at Wheeling Park Golf Course.

The 19th annual Play-It-Again Sports Amateur Classic – with a purse of $2,500 – will play its first round. The tournament will conclude on Sunday.

It’s the first of five events on the schedule for the OVGA, which utilizes a scoring system to crown its overall champion in the early fall.

The second event is the first highly coveted event of the season with a purse of $12,000. The ninth annual Kalkreuth Roofing Amateur Classic will be held on June 13-14 at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course.

Two weeks later, the 17th annual Bob Finegan Memorial unfolds at Wheeling Park.

The biggest purse of the season will be handed out on July 11-12 when the 16th annual Stoney Hollow Tire Amateur is played at Oglebay Park’s Speidel’s Palmer and Jones Course.

The 16th annual John Rasz Memorial Amateur is set for July 25-26 at Highland Springs.

On Sunday, Sept. 6, the season concludes with the TJ’s Sports Garden Senior Amateur at Crispin.

All of the event include championship and senior flights.

BELMONT HILLS RESULTS

The club’s annual Spring Best Ball event was held on Saturday, May 16.

The winning team of Vic Wood, Matt Lucki, Gary Young and John Timko finished with a 106.

Second place went to the quartet of Larry Landtiser, Marlin Harper, Terry Carson and John Sambuco with a 108.

Rennie Minor won the closest to the pin.

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

The Sharpsky Printing event was held on May 13.

Larry Goodnight captured the medal scoring with a round of 35. Roger Kupfer was second at a shot back. Bob Green and Gary Mercer finished third and fourth, respectively with 38s. Art Lightner rounded out the top five of the medal scoring with a 39.

John Wakim captured the handicap scoring with a 34. Dick Moore was second with a 35 and Tom Mitchell was third with a 35. Dave Slonaker was fourth at 36.

Finishing in a three-way tie for fifth was John Bryan, Tom Pinkerton and Rick Richmond at 36.

WHEELING COUNTRY CLUB

The field is now set for the club’s annual Member-Member Tournament, which will begin on Sunday, May 31.

The top seed in the event is Scott Seabright and Jared Jorden. They’ll meet 16th-seeded Ron Stephens and Doc Shaffer.

Brad Archer and Andy Carrigan are the second seed and will take on 15th-seeded Carl Bippus and Greg Caro.

Phil High and Joe Marchlenski are the third seed and will meet 14th-seeded Jeff Cieply and Doug Molnar, who are the 14th seed.

Joe Barki and Brian Komorowski earned the fourth seed and will meet Jim Buch and Dave Zatezalo, the 13th seed.

The fifth seed belongs to Justin Ferrell and Rico Simonetti. They’ll take on 12th seeded Jay Adams and Reno Diorio.

Bobby Hartong and Jim Brinsky are the sixth seed and will meet C. Miller and J.T. Thomas.

The seventh seed went to Mike Romaine and Glenn Didriksen. They’ll take on Sean Doyle and Alex Saseen.

Thadd Obecny and Thad Obecny II are seeded eighth and will meet ninth seeded Jeff Shultz and Tim Roberts.

WHEELING CC LADIES

OPENING DAY

The opening day team scramble was held. The trio of Sharon Byrd, Karen Dorio and Sharon Tatich prevailed with a round of 41.

Second place went to Shaye Pentino, Alana Archer, Dina Cooney and Rachel Goodman, who finished with a 44.

ACE

BRAD MITCHELL of Tiltonsville recorded an ace on Monday at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course. Mitchell’s feat occurred on the 165-yard 7-hole. He used a 5-wood for the shot, which was witnessed by Daniel Oliver.

BELMONT HILLS JUNIOR

TOURNAMENT

The annual junior tournament will be held on Monday, July 27 at Belmont Hills Country Club. The event will feature divisions for boys and girls, including ages 17-18, 15-16 and 13-14 for boys; 16-18 and 13-15 for girls. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start.

The top three finishers in each age group, for boys and girls, will receive an award. The entry fee is $30 with checks being made payable to Barnesville Golf Parents.

Lunch will be provided for all tournament contestants and available for purchase for all spectators. Carts will be available for spectators, but they must remain on the cart path.

JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

Beaver Local golf team is hosting the inaugural HOYA Classic on Tuesday, June 9 at Turkana Golf Course.

The 18-hole event will feature 14-16 and 17-18 year old divisions for both boys and girls. The boys will play from the white tees and the girls will play from the red tees.

The entry fee is $35 per player and players may bring a caddy. Awards will be presented and food and drinks will be provided.

UPCOMING SCRAMBLES

The annual Sally Buffalo Park Board Golf Scramble will be held June 13 at the Cadiz Country Club.

The format for the event will include a four-man, 18-hold scramble with a shotgun tee-off at 1 p.m. Registration is scheduled for noon. Cost is $65 per golfer and includes a steak dinner and refreshments on the course.

Raffles, door prizes and more will also be available.

As in the past, organizers are requesting the assistance of local businesses, organizations and individuals for hole sponsorships, door prizes, gift donations, etc. A donation of $40 will cover a hole sponsorship with a sign. However, those donating $50 will not only have a sponsorship at a hole but will also have their name printed on the event’s t-shirts.

  • THE WHEELING Jesuit University Cardinal Athletic Club Golf Scramble will be held on Thursday, June 4 at the Arnold Palmer Golf Course at Oglebay Park. The four-person scramble is $400 per team and every hole has a prize, including special prizes for women. The tournament will be limited to 128 players or 32 teams.   • THE OHIO VALLEY Wrestling Officials Association will hold its golf scramble on Saturday, Aug. 8 at Cadiz Country Club. The event will begin at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start. The cost is $220 for a four-person team and that includes golf, cart, prizes, skins game and dinner.

There will be special skill prizes for long drive, longest putt and closest to the pin. There are sponsorship opportunities available, too. There are $50 hole sponsors or $500 for a major sponsor, which includes a team. The proceeds of the event benefit OVAC wrestling and local scholarships.   • The fifth annual Amanda Rosepapa Memorial Foundation golf scramble is scheduled for Saturday, Aug. 1.

The event will be a four-person scramble at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course in Armstrong Mills and the entry fee is $200 per team. The cost includes golf, cart, lunch and beverages. There will be prizes for longest drive, longest putt and closest to the pin.

The proceeds of the event will benefit the OVAC softball scholarship and go toward starting a “second chance fund” for nursing students at Belmont College.
