Oglebay Women’s Golf Scramble staged

The Oglebay Park Women’s Golf Association held its annual scramble at Crispin Golf Course on June 16.

Winning the low gross scoring title was Pat Carey, Patty Gerlando, Kathy Moore and Mary Beth Arlia. The low net title went to Janis Cook, Donita Rush, Patty Stewart and Karen Fabry.

All told, 80 women from the tri-state area competed in the event, which featured a $2,000 purse. The beneficiaries of the event’s proceeds are the Ohio and Belmont County Animal Shelters.

During the course of the event, several skill prizes were awarded.

The longest drives went to Arlia and Joyce Berdine. The closest to the pins went to Carol Lepic and Sally Hodgkiss. The longest putts went to Jan Vaupel and Liz Jolley.

JUNIOR GOLF

The First National Bank Junior Golf Tour made a stop at Oak Shadows Golf Club in New Philadelphia earlier this week.

Union Local graduate Jarret Causby finished third in the 16-18 year old division with a round of 76. He was six back of the winner.

Martins Ferry’s Joel Shane posted a round of 83, which was tied for sixth overall.

Other area players to take part include: Bridgeport’s Matt Herink, Bridgeport’s Dylan Nowakowski, Bridgeport’s Kevin Herink, Martins Ferry’s Luke Krol, Union Local’s Josh Britton and St. Clairsville’s Will Foster.

WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB

The Wheeling Park Memorial was held on Sunday, June 21.

Gary Mercer fired a round of 67 to win the championship by four shots over Bob Green. Robbie Evans finished third with a round of 73. Art Lightner (74) and Bruno DeCrease (76) rounded out the top five.

In the handicap scoring, Jim Ennis prevailed with a 67. Chris Bommer posted a 67 to finish second. Rick Richmond (68), Ryan Richmond (70) were third and fourth, respectively. There was a tie for fifth between Bob Geyer and Joe Kosar. Each finished with a 71.

UPCOMING SCRAMBLES

THE INAUGURAL Richard P. Saffield Memorial Golf Scramble will be held on Saturday, Aug. 1 at BecWood Hills Golf Course in Mt. Plesant. The cost is $50 per player, which includes golf, cart, food, door prizes and skill prizes. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Richard P. The Bellaire Touchdown Club will be sponsoring its ninth annual golf outing on Saturday, June 27 at Fairway River Links. The entry fee is $60 per person or $240.00 per team of four. The cost includes cart, lunch and beverages during the scramble and a dinner afterwards. Entries forms are available at Gulla’s Lunch, Fairway River Links, Frizzi’s Market or at the Am. Legion. THE INAUGURAL St. John Central Fighting Irish Football Golf Scamble will be held on Saturday, July 11 at Fairway River Links. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 7 a.m. and registration begins at 6:15 a.m.

The entry fee is $260 per team or $65 per person, which includes golf, cart, door prizes, drink tickets, hamburgers and hot dogs at the turn as well as a rigatoni and sausage meal following the scramble. There will also be a 50-50 raffle.

Players must register as a foursome.

The Tom Donahue Memorial Classic Golf Scramble will be held on Saturday, July 11 at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course in Armstrong Mills. The entry fee is $50 per player or $200 per team and that must be paid by July 4. The fee includes golf, cart, food, refreshments, prizes and door prizes. The event will be a four-person, best-ball event. There will be an optional skins game for $5. Registration is from 8-9 a.m. and the event will begin at 9. There is a limit of 72 golfers.
