BHCC Junior Tourney winners crowned
The Belmont Hills Country Club hosted its annual Junior Golf Tournament last Monday.
Former Union Local standout Jarret Causby was the tournament medalist. He won the 17-18 year old division with a round of 2-over 74. Trailing him was recent Wheeling Jesuit signee Stephen Gretchen, who posted a round of 77.
Martins Ferry senior-to-be Joel Shane fired an 82 to finish third. Bryce Walrath and Evan Archer tied for fourth with a round of 84.
In the 15-16 year old division, Bridgeport’s Matthew Herink posted a round of 78, including an even par 36 on the back 9. Aaron Rataiczak finished second with an 82 and Davey Wells finished third with an 84. Garrett Bopp and Jarren Straugn rounded out the top five with rounds of 87.
In the 13-14 year old division, Brando Vucelich produced the low round to win by eight shots thanks to an 83. Will Livingston was second and Cameron McIntosh was third with a 97.
In the 16-18 year old female division, Kailey Pettit prevailed with a round of 84. She was 20 shots better than Ciara Bauman. Paige Hayes was third. The lone entrant in the female 13-15 year old grouping was Maci Wise.
MORE JUNIOR GOLF
The Marietta Tiger Paws Classic was held last Friday at Marietta Country Club.
Shane had a big tournament, finishing second overall with a round of 79. He was eight shots off the pace.
Barnesville’s Davey Wells finished second in the 15-16 year old division, posting an 88. He was five shots back of the winner. Wells also took part in the Crystal Springs Junior Golf Tournament at the Crystal Springs Golf Club in Hopewell on Tuesday.
Barnesville’s Carter Wells also took part in the 9-hole 10-12 year old division.
PREP GOLF
Speaking of junior golf, the first high school sport of the upcoming year begins in less than a week when high school golf tees off.
Official practice in Ohio begins on Saturday and the season opens on Aug. 6, but teams will get to take part in a scramble/scrimmage on Aug. 5 at Belmont Hills Country Club.
To help get you ready for the event, The Times Leader’s annual prep golf preview will publish on Sunday, Aug. 9.
SAFFIELD SCRAMBLE
Received a message from Carol Saffield Tuesday evening that the inaugural Rich Saffield Memorial Golf Scramble, which had been slated for Saturday at BecWood Hills Golf Course was being postponed.
The scramble, which will benefit the Rich Saffield Scholarship fund at Union Local High School, will be played in the fall, but a date hasn’t been finalized yet.
ROBBINS RIDGE
The Senecaville Senior League resumed play last Monday with Pilck and McJessey posting both the low net and low gross scores with rounds of 32.
The closest to the pin awards went to Merrell Stevens and Dennis Pilck prevailed in those.
OVGL SCRAMBLE
It will be an Ohio Valley Golf League tournament and be played in scramble format with separate teams for boys and girls, which is mandatory by OHSAA rules. Schools are able to enter more than one team.
The entry fee is $20 per player and the event is open to schools in Ohio or West Virginia.
The top three teams will receive awards.

UPCOMING SCRAMBLES
THE CAMPAIGN for Moving Healthcare Forward will hold a golf scramble at Belmont Hills Country Club on Thursday, Sept. 3 with a shotgun start slated for noon. The event will be a four-person scramble and include skill contests.
Sponsorships are availble for the event and there are four levels, all of which include a team entry in the field. Prior to the round, lunch will be available and a steak fry will follow the tournament. The deadline to enter is Aug. 24. The Bellaire Touchdown Club will be sponsoring its ninth annual golf outing on Saturday, Sept. 26 at Fairway River Links. The entry fee is $60 per person or $240 per team of four. A golf scramble In Memory of Mario Veneri is being sponsored by the Powhatan American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Youth Fund. This is the second one, the first was in memory of Marvin Brown. The date is Saturday, July 25 with shotgun start at 9 a.m., at Horseshoe Bend golf course in Armstrong Mills.The entry fee is $200 per team, which includes cart, food, and refreshments. Team are encouraged to pre-register to ensure team entry. Cash prizes for the top three teams will be awarded. Door prizes and raffles and other events will be held. The Ohio Valley Wrestling Officials Association will hold its golf scramble on Saturday, Aug. 8 at Cadiz Country Club. The event will begin at 1 p.m. with a shotgun start.
The cost is $220 for a four-person team and that includes golf, cart, prizes, skins game and dinner. There will be special skill prizes for long drive, longest putt and closest to the pin. There are sponsorship opportunities available, too.

The event will be a four-person scramble at Horseshoe Bend Golf Course in Armstrong Mills and the entry fee is $200 per team. The cost includes golf, cart, lunch and beverages. There will be prizes for longest drive, longest putt and closest to the pin.
