BMAC Scramble winners announced

The 20th annual Belmont Mountaineer Athletic Club (BMAC) golf scramble was held last Monday at Moundsville Country Club.

With guest of honor Ed Pastilong – a Moundsville native and former West Virginia University Athletic Director – in attendance, the tournament attracted 14 total teams.

Five of those competed in the corporate division and the remaining nine were in the open division.

The Corporate Cup came down to a scorecard playoff after both United Bank and Stoney Hollow Tire teams tied with a 13-under par.

United Bank, however, won the top prize because it birdied the number one handicap hole on the golf course and Stoney Hollow settled for a par.

The United Bank team was comprised of Jade Waligura, Craig White, Greg Paetzold and Gary Pickett.

In the open division, the team of Jack Matkovich, Bruce Thompson, Frank Hewitt and Frank Polsinelli fired a 17 under par to prevail.

The skill awards went to Waligura (long drive), Jon Berardinelli (closest to the pin) and Fred Porter (longest putt).

This was the first time the event was held in Moundsville. According to event director John S. Marshall, it was moved from its traditional home at BecWood Golf Course because of Pastilong’s involvment.

The winner of the club’s annual fundraiser drawing was Joe Belancic of Warwood. He won two tickets to a trio of WVU football games this season.

Marshall offered his and the BMAC’s thanks to the team at Premier Bank for registration help and his wife Sandy and Doris Budinscak, who is the wife of BMAC official John Budinscak, for their efforts during the tournament.

All told, the event had more than 60 sponsors with Progessive Bank serving as the cart sponsor; Stoney Hollow Tire was the prize sponsor and Paree Insurance also was one of the major sponsors.

The proceeds of the event go toward the BMAC endowed scholarship that’s presented to an Ohio Valley athlete at West Virginia University. Currently, Steubenville graduate Shaq Petteway receives the scholarship.
