Fourth of July tourneys staged at BHCC, Wheeling CC
The Belmont Hills Country Club membership got a tuneup before this weekend’s annual Member-Guest event unfolds.
The annual Fred and Mary Jo Mehlman Independence Day Tournament was held, utilizing the 2 Net, Best Ball of 4 scoring format.
The winning team of Zach Azallion, Chuck Poindexter, Jeff Bohus and Mary Vota finished with a score of 111, which was three shots better than the team of Dave Reasbeck, Mark Bukmir, J.C. Thrash and Michele Abel along with the squad of Bryan Woodford, Gary Young, Kevin Abel and Dan Auber.
The Red Ball Winners, which was 1 Net, Best Ball of Four, was won by the team of Reasbeck, Bukmir, Thrash and Abel.
Prizes for closest to the pin were also awarded. The top three were Dave Ogle, Rennie Minor and Rick Frio.
WHEELING COUNTRY CLUB
The annual Independence Day Derby was held with the scoring system using the one best ball and 1 best ball net format.
The winning team of Scott Seabright, Joe Barki, Barry Christmas and Brian Komorowski fired a 125, which was 15 under par.
The foursome of Justin Ferrell, Greg Caro, Sean Doyle and Jeff Shultz tied with Thadd Obecny, Thadd Obecny II, Paul Irby and Ron Johnson.
The longest putt contest went to Mike Leo, who sank a 25 footer on the 18th. The closest to the pin on the second shot on the 17th hole prize went to Jay Guthrie, who dropped his shot to three feet from the pin.
WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB
The Stoney Hollow Tire event was held earlier this month. Bruno DeCrease prevailed in the 9-hole event with a score of 34. He was two shots clear of Chris Bommer and Gary Mercer. Jim Ennis (40) and Terry Yonkins (41) rounded out the top five.
In the handicap scoring, Don DeWitt prevailed with a 34. He was a shot better than Robbie Evans and two clear of Bob Green. Clark Sambuo (36) and Mike Perring (36) rounded out the top five after scorecard playoffs were considered.
20th Annual BMAC Golf Classic
The 20th annual BMAC Mountaineer Golf Classic is scheduled for Monday, July 20 at the Moundsville Country Club. The event gets underway with a shotgun start at 10 a.m.
This year’s honoree will be Moundsville native and former West Virginia University athletic director Ed Pastilong, who will also participate in the outing. His guidance was instrumental in establishing BMAC and he is a long-time supporter and advocate of BMAC.
All proceeds from the event fund BMAC’s Upper Ohio Valley Endowed Athletic Scholarship. This year’s recipient is Steubenville’s Shaq Petteway. Previous recipients have been Alyssa DeSantis (Steubenville); Zach Cooper (Weirton); Liz Repella (Steubenville) and Dominic Prezzia (St. Clairsville).
The cost is $75 per golfer or $300 per team. There will be skill prizes as well as raffles. The event will be divided into two divisions – an Open and a Corporate.
Froehlich’s of Steubenville will cater the event. The post-event dinner is being opened up to the public. The cost is $20 per person.

OVGL SCRAMBLE
It will be an Ohio Valley Golf League tournament and be played in scramble format with separate teams for boys and girls, which is mandatory by OHSAA rules. Schools are able to enter more than one team.
The entry fee is $20 per player and the event is open to schools in Ohio or West Virginia.
The top three teams will receive awards.

BELMONT HILLS JUNIOR
TOURNAMENT
The annual junior tournament will be held on Monday, July 27 at Belmont Hills Country Club. The event will feature divisions for boys and girls, including ages 17-18, 15-16 and 13-14 for boys; 16-18 and 13-15 for girls. The event will begin at 10 a.m. with a shotgun start.The top three finishers in each age group, for boys and girls, will receive an award. The entry fee is $30 with checks being made payable to Barnesville Golf Parents. Lunch will be provided for all tournament contestants and available for purchase for all spectators. Carts will be available for spectators, but they must remain on the cart path.

UPCOMING SCRAMBLE
A golf scramble In Memory of Mario Veneri is being sponsored by the Powhatan American Legion Ladies Auxiliary Youth Fund. This is the second one, the first was in memory of Marvin Brown. The date is July 25 with shotgun start at 9 a.m., at Horseshoe Bend golf course in Armstrong Mills.
The entry fee is $200 per team, which includes cart, food, and refreshments. Team are encouraged to pre-register to ensure team entry. Cash prizes for the top three teams will be warded. The St. Joseph, Tiltonsville, Holy Name Society is sponsoring its 33rd annual Four-Man Golf Scramble on Saturday, August 15 at Fairway River Links in Rayland. Entry fee for the 7 a.m. shotgun start is $50 per golfer and includes a golf cart, and continuous food and beverages. Trophies and prizes will be awarded.
