WHEELING COUNTRY CLUB

If you enjoy match play golf, you may want to take trip down to Wheeling Country Club today for the finals of the club championship.

The championship match will pit defending champion Rico Simonetti against Thadd Obecny II.

Also on tap, is the club’s women’s championship, which will be an 18-hole stroke play event. It will tee off at 10 a.m.

Another interesting event slated for the Wheeling CC layout is the Tri-State PGA Kalkreuth Classic, which will tee off at 10 a.m. on Monday. The tournament features “50-60 of the best PGA playing Club Professionals in the area.”

The club’s junior championship will be held next Thursday at 9 a.m.

JUNIOR GOLF

With high school players heading toward the start of the prep season, the junior tour events keep on coming. The latest event was the Fuller’s Fairway Junior Tournament at Fuller’s Fairway Golf Course in Zanesville.

John Glenn’s Derek Crum shot a 2-over round of 72 to take the medalist title for the 17-18 year old division. Meadowbrook’s Taylor Gander shot a 76, which was good enough for third.

Barnesville’s Zack Thompson was fourth in the 12-13 year old division, which played nine holes. He shot a 49, which was four shots off the pace.

BHCC JUNIOR

In Thursday’s edition, we had the listing of the Belmont Hills Junior Golf Tournament results. Brendan Vucelich claimed the 13-14 year old division with a round of 83. His score was eight shots better than his nearest competitor.

ACE

LEM TCHAPPAT of Clarington aced the 134-yard ninth hole at the Palmer Course at Oglebay Park. He used a 7-iron for his shot, which was witnessed by Lou Brown, Bob Meyer and Gary Cunningham.

ALBATROSS

While most always want to report an ace, there’s a belief that a ‘double eagle’ or albatross is even more difficult to achieve.

Ironically, on the same day that Tchappat – and just one group ahead of him, Powhatan’s Brady Dierkes recorded a 2 par on the 503-yard par 5 8th hole. He used a 3 hybrid from 213 yards away. The shot was witnessed by Jim Delongo, Chuck Meyer and Randy Plutte.

PRO SWEEPS

The Wheeling Country Club held its individual low net with full handicap event which threw out the player’s worst two holes. Thadd Obecny Sr. prevailed in the event with a score of 52, while Paul Irby was second with a 53. Joe Marchlenski was third with a 55. J.T. Thomas, Justin Ferrell and Doug Molnar finished with a 56.

PGA SCHEDULE CHANGE

I was interested to hear that the World Golf Championship’s Bridgestone Invitational is moving on the PGA calendar next season. The event will end on July 3. The 2015 event tees off next week in Akron, but had to move in 2016 because golf’s addition to the Olympic program. I was a bit disappointed in the move until I heard the reasoning as to why. Golf belongs in the Olympics and moving the Bridgestone once every four years is a logical move.

OVGL SCRAMBLE

It will be an Ohio Valley Golf League tournament and be played in scramble format with separate teams for boys and girls, which is mandatory by OHSAA rules. Schools are able to enter more than one team.

The entry fee is $20 per player and the event is open to schools in Ohio or West Virginia.

The top three teams will receive awards.
